Apparently neem oil isn't sold in Canada anymore. Went to hydro store and they didn't have it. They did have super overpriced spore syringes, plastic petri dishes and bags of organic rye (for people who don't know health food stores exist I guess) which I thought was interesting. Going to spray them with pyrethrum and hope for the best.

I'm scared to repot now too. Because maybe they came from the soil....

Pasteurization perhaps could be a solution? Or do mites not really stick around in soil?

no wonder I've had such a bitch of a time trying it,
I wonder if I can import it
I hate paying shipping costs from the states
what the fuck is up with that,
so many seemingly benign things aren't allowed up here.

I took a close look at my more sickly looking plant today which has some leaves curling and turning brown and it had small areas of white under some of the leaves and also white dots on the underside of some of the leaves. I rubbed these off with my thumb. It looks similar to the infestation that I have on my mugwort plant. I think it is damaging the leaves and several of the leaves have fallen of the plant.

What is the best way to treat this. I have never had anything attack my salvia plants before. I don't want it spreading to the adjacent plant which also seems to be getting some brown edges on some of the leaves although I couldn't see any of the white stuff on that plant.

Jesus everyone in this thread has spider mites...

Use some neem oil or a very very very small amount of dish soap, spray the plants, the underside of leaves once every 3 days, rinse the plant off with regular water after each spray if using dish soap.

If outdoors spray in late day or else they'll cook.

I was just going to try some weak dish soap solution.

How long shall I leave it on the leaves before rinsing off ?

It looks like the same stuff that I got on my mugwort plants which keeps coming back but only got onto one plant thank goodness

I'm not sure, I'd leave it on until it drys then rinse it off. Repeat in another 3-4 days.
Consistency is the best way to get rid of them.

yeah neem oil also i used Miraclegro "Natures care Garden Insect control" works very good. but neem oil works good for mites... dam Imp i hope i didn;t pass any to you ... it took me about a whole week to get rid of them. I never rinse it off... and I sprayed them every other day. when you spray the neem oil make sure you spray under the leaves ...

Nah amonra I think I'm good, as soon as you told me about the mite situation I washed that plant off really well and squashed a few spider looking things bigger than mites.

I think you warned me just in time, thanks for that

I feel like an idiot. I didn't know what spider mite damage looked like in the past and bought an obviously infested plant and now it's been a recurring nightmare

No reason to "feel like an idiot". It took me about 7 months total and cutting down my (chili) plants twice to realize I had mites. It struck me only when I saw the webbing which appeared after months of the bastards munching on my plants. And not all mites make webs anyway. And I lost two irreplaceable plants (It was an accidental cross, I have no more seeds, and I tried to recreate the cross, to no avail.) because of my negligence.

I've learned my lesson. I'm still spraying -- actually only for maintenance/prevention now. I spray all of them every other week with a weak neem oil mix. I also spray (soak) the top of the soil.

My plants are outside in the summer and early autumn. As the amount of sunlight gets less then the plants will start to flower. If you are growing under indoor lights then maybe you can cut back on the number of hours of sunlight and start the flowering cycle. The perfume from the flowers is subtle but gorgeous.

I have some infestation and it looks like little white dots mostly attached to the leaf veins on the underside of the leaves. Right now I have been crushing them and removing by hand.  This is the first insect problem that I have had in 4 years

yes I am aware of the light cycle, but I had for many years plants outdoors and they never cared to flower either... on the other hand I never tried to induce flowering either so  yeah.... Also outdoors it is important if there are no artificial lights around it at night, that can stop the flowering process, so I read;  and that could be a reason why my plants haven't flowered in the past.
Sounds like you have mites. crushing them won't cut it. You need Neem oil!
