Is Weed Making Me Sick? (Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome) (LONG BUT PLEASE READ)
    #23841046 - 11/17/16 09:28 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

For a really long time, I've had both bowel and nausea problems. In elementary school, I got the flu for the very first time in my life, and I think it was a pretty scarring experience. The next day, all was fine until lunch. I started eating, and then I got this nauseous feeling in the back of my throat for a little bit. Who the fuck would have thought how well I would get to know this feeling over the course of my life :frown:

Throughout middle school, I didn't really eat too much, definitely not even close to as much as the people around me. Midway through, I started getting bad diarrhea ... every day. This didn't stop until my second year of University. I was too embarrassed and nervous about it to admit it to anyone or say anything about it to my parents. I just thought it was a phase or something and it would stop eventually.

I started getting bad anxiety in the beginning of high school, which made my nausea problem SO much worse.

Over the years, my anxiety improved and so did my control with the nausea. Then during first year of University, I was noticing a sensation on the top of my stomach all the time. Not a pain or cramp or anything, it just felt like pressure on the very top of my stomach, or like my stomach felt heavy at the very top. Every day, all day. Keep in mind, I had been smoking weed daily since the beginning of high school up until this point, and even with this stomach issue, I still continued to do it.

Unsure of what was going on, I went to my family doctor to see what was up. She scheduled an upper endoscopy for me, as well as an abdominal ultrasound. I took the ultrasound, everything was fine and my stomach was clear. One day I ended up actually throwing up, so I said fuck it I needed to go to the hospital. I puked 2 more times in the ER before I was treated. They asked if I smoked weed, I told them I've been smoking weed daily for years. They said I probably have something called Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome and I need to stop smoking weed and all my nausea/stomach problems would stop. They hooked me up to an IV to give me anti-nauseant medication for a few hours, then sent me home (I threw up one more time when I got home ...).

I didn't believe them, and I kept smoking anyway. I got my upper endoscopy done, and then when I got the results, they also said there was literally nothing observably wrong going on with my stomach. After a few days, it seemed like that pressure in my stomach disappeared. I still had nausea here and there, and I still had diarrhea, but only half of the time now. I thought I was better.

Last month, I had a bad anxiety attack, and it made me really nauseous. The nausea stayed with me all through the next day. I could barely eat, and later in the night I puked thinking it would make me feel better. It didn't. I puked again later the next morning, and I had no idea what was happening. After 5 whole days of being so nauseous I had to live on Gravol so I could eat (because the nausea was so bad that I couldn't eat without it), I went to the hospital again. They took a blood test and examined me, and again, they told me "You're probably fine, but you should stop smoking weed". They thought it was the fucking weed again! Over the next few days, I got my eating back on track, and I cut back to only smoking one or two bowls at night. I seemed to return to normal (normal being the on and off nausea/diarrhea I have been experiencing for years).

Then last Saturday, I started having a nausea attack again, and I've only just recovered today. I decided to quit weed as an experiment to see if it really is the weed that's fucking me up. So far, I have been feeling better each day since Saturday (the day I quit), but not 100%. I still have on and off diarrhea, still had nausea on and off (although it has gotten better today, today is the first day I woke up not feeling nauseous). I've been getting my eating on a better track this week, so I don't know if its that or stopping smoking.

The reason I feel I need to ask this, is because my symptoms don't fit CHS ... Symptoms include cyclic vomiting cycles, which I never get (other than that one day a year ago), compulsive bathing (hot showers seem to be the only relief for these people ... again, I never do this either), abdominal pain/cramps (never really get this either), and recurrent nausea (the only symptom I really seem to have, even though, like I said, my nausea problems started years before weed even came into the picture ...).

I can't get decent professional help because as soon as I mention weed, they say stop smoking weed and kick me out the door.

If ANYONE has ANY insight to this syndrome or my problem, PLEASE help me. Also, if anyone wants more details about all of my symptoms and their history, feel free to ask or message me and we can talk. I can't fucking live like this anymore man ...

I would suggest, from my own experience, is to contact a specialist in Gastroenterology or go to a new hospital. Do not mention weed because of their reaction to anything wrong with a person who smokes weed as the weed causing it.:wat:

In my personal opinion you could have IBS, or Irritable Bowl Syndrome, or something in the like. All your symptoms fit IBS or related ailments. But ask as doctor, not a forum, just do not mention weed. :stoned:

see a reputable GI doctor.  also dont use cannabis for 30 days, i mean dont use any -  ZERO, 30 days ok?.  that way you can clear out your head and system and see if it actually is the weed or not and finally put that issue to rest.  then u can get on with the rest of your life and know for sure or not.

Why not try stopping for a little while? No harm in it and then you can say for sure and say to doctors.

I went to the hospital because I was in *intense* pain. I mean damn near immobilized because it was so intense. It's some form of arthritis, I really don't know, stopped going to the dr because of money and a lack of insurance and I have never gotten a diagnosis that a dr didn't pull straight out of their ass. When I went though the dr took a blood test w/o my consent, said he found pot in my system and that must be why I was freaking out (I had really bad anxiety from the pain) and dismissed me. My mother drove me there and she was in tears because of how much pain I was in, I didn't ask for any sort of drugs, I didn't want any, mainly I just wanted to know what was wrong with me as at the time I literally didn't know if I was going to die or what was going on. I still don't know what's going on, but it's been 7 years now.

Ouch.  I've suffered from that.  First it happened sporadically.  A hot bath brought relief.  Then the frequency increased and then I had  daily and day long agony from this.  Hot baths 7 times a day was my only relief.  I only diagnosed myself because the hot bath solution is so commonly used for this condition that it was easy to find scant information on the internet.  I stopped smoking and it stopped mostly after 5 days.    It still rears its ugly head at times, but I jump in the tub fast.  I smoke much less now.  The Cannabanoid Hyperemesis is chronic, recurring and completely debilitating.  Mine ended only after I quit for a while.  .
Your issue sounds more complicated.  Try a hot bath though.  For me my abdomen and intestines feel cramped and only relax under hot water.  The pressure builds until I surrender to the tub.  Good luck and let me know if you hear of more solutions for this. It is hard to be smoke free.
