These celebrities don't sign autographs.

Don't know if I can blame them. It's hard to imagine knowing that every single time you stepped out into public -- that just about any and everybody who recognized you would want an autograph or a picture.
If you were an A list star, would you sign autographs? Or would you politely (or not so politely) tell autograph seekers to fuck off?

I feel like I would, I also feel like I'd get tired of it after a while though but if I were a newer/younger actor I wouldn't want people to think I was a dick since public image can easily make or break you in that line of work. Almost every one of those celebrities were older people who I'm willing to bet did sign autographs earlier in their careers.

I got an autograph from Mickey O'Rourke in Fort Worth Texas at an Italian I was serving at a long time ago back in the 90's. He had this body guard with him and they acted all tough and shit (I'm pretty sure it was pre-surgery). He still signed it. He seemed a bit put off. If the actors don't want that kind of attention why did they go into acting in the first place? Ego plays a huge role with most of them I'm sure and people surrounding them feeds that, but I can see how it would be scary.
I know a pretty famous guy that was best man at George Cloony's wedding, but he is humble and does not talk much about it, he just likes being a regular guy. He tends bar as well for now until his daughter graduates this year, then he's going back to LA. He invited me to visit, I can't wait! If I ever met George or an A list celeb I don't think I could be very calm, I am starstruck when I meet famous people. I met a couple of celebs when I lived in New Orleans. I say fuck those people that don't at least sign some, the people wanting the autograph are the ones that keep them employed!

I think I would, being in public doesn't give me anxiety at all, I don't really feel much being around large groups of people, just numb. I tend to shut down, but not in a rude way, I just focus on all the sounds going on around me and allow them to paint in my mind.
So think this would allow me to sign autographs well.
I have a great ability to numb myself to whatever my surroundings are and do what must be done.

Just read the link, why do some of them care if a person makes a few bucks off their autograph? They are completely loaded with cash! WTF? Steve Martin seemed to be the coolest one, and Bruce Willis is a giant phallus with ears. They should be honored, but then again after so many years of being hounded, chased, and surrounded I can see how it would/might get monotonous, boring, and possibly dangerous. Look what happened to John Lennon. If a person didn't want attention like that then why go into mainstream acting or mainstream music? You know going into it that it's possible you might get famous and that is part of the draw to the life. I'm sure people like Neal Degrasse and such have a sort of celebrity type life. Wonder what that type of celebrity has to say about the subject.

I don't even see why someone would want a signature, especially if it is just on a napkin or something. I can kind of understand if it is on a book or baseball related to the person, so someone could make money, but then you're basically asking for money. I would probably refuse to sign anything. I might offer to do a photo instead if I was famous.

I wouldn't sign or pose for pictures. I act, you like it, that should be enough. Leave me alone.
At the low point of my career I'd sign something, post it on Ebay and get a massive profit because of rarity.

Bill Murray is just cool.

I read somewhere that Murray will do shit like walk up to people that he sees scoping him out, and he'll just do something unexpectedly like grab their drink out of their hand, take a drink, hand it back to them and then walk off saying "your friends will never believe this story".

Don't know how true it is however

when people go up to celebrities and ask them for their autographs they're just trying to collect the bill, cuz that's what happens when u make deals with the devil.. you're gonna end up owing some people, and if u don't pay up then there goes ur career, or worse ur reputation..

I've gotten autographs or pictures taken with the following celebrities:
Dennis Rodman Tito Ortiz Fieldy from KoRn Jay Gordon from Orgy Gwyneth Paltrow Liv Tyler Rampage Jackson (edit)
Less famous celebrities: Dana Lynn Bailey Jay Cutler
Funny enough, I've seen Gwyneth Paltrow and Liv Tyler both naked. I met them at Beverly Hot Springs, it's a spa where everybody bathes naked. Apparently lots of famous celebrities go there for spa treatments.
Gwyneth Paltrow looks very skinny, flat-chested, very lean thin body. Liv Tyler has HUGE hips, way bigger than what I was expecting. She's a lot wider in person than she looks in movies or pictures.
Here's me and Tito
Here's me and Dennis Rodman, dude looks pissed off because he absolutely is Guy is a complete and total dick
I feel like I've met way more, I just can't remember them at the moment right now.

He's surprisingly short. He's only like 5'8" or 5'9" or something, and you're not expecting somebody of that height when you see his pictures.
Oh yeah, I forgot I met Rampage Jackson too on the same day. Rampage Jackson is not only a lot taller than Jay Cutler, he also has much broader shoulders than Cutler. Rampage Jackson looks wayyyyy bigger in person.
Rampage Jackson totally wanted to bang me too, he talked to me a lot longer than everybody else and kept going on and on about how much he loves Japan. I bet if I stayed and kept talking to him he would have eventually asked for my number. I would have been scared of him though, dude would totally crush me.

I'd never allow myself to become famous, losing your privacy is not worth the ego kicks or the money.
Can't say I know how I would react if it happened, probably would sign autographs and that kind of thing for awhile.

Maybe Jay was carb depleted lol..it looks like Rampage's head takes up a lot of his torso mass
But yeah wiki says he's 5'10, I thought he was shorter, pretty common for BB'ers to be on the shorter side though.

You can tell Cutler blew out his bicep, it's all torn looking in the photo. He's obviously not in his glory days anymore.
Also his Wiki claims he's 5'10", but I swear he looked like 5'8" or 5'9.
Rampage Jackson is HUUUUUUUGE in person. Extremely broad shoulders, very tall. It's so weird how none of that translates into photos though. When you see him in person all you see is a giant black guy

Yeah he's pretty much a dead man walking in Chicago these days. Rumor has it the entire locker room hates him, and that he's basically playing out the string until he's shipped out of town. He'll get an opportunity somewhere else but his days as a Chicago Bear are numbered.

Being a public figure probably becomes a chore after years and years. It's a lot easier to be a fan and watch or hear something a famous person did, than to be that famous person and have to be performing 24/7 to placate every fan that recognizes you out in public, which may be every 10 minutes for some. To the fan, it's their one single encounter with that celebrity and it's special while that celebrity has encounters with fans all the time to the point of being annoyed--I mean think about how often it must happen to them. And not all of them ever wanted the fame in the first place, or they thought they wanted it but realized it's not what they thought it'd be at the start.

At a certain point you'd have to just live the VIP life and stay out of public spaces for the most part, but even then there's only so much you can do

Several years back Ron Kittle, the Rookie of the year on the 83 playoff White Sox, had a good but fairly short career. He later was doing a charity event. He asked Barry Bonds, who was still playing at the time for an autograph to auction for the charity. Barry Bonds said I don't sign for white people. Barry Bonds denies it and Ron Kittle has repeatedly maintained that he will take a polygraph. I don't remember for sure but I think the charity was a children's hospital.
Just my opinion, but I think once a piece of shit, always a piece of shit.

Then go into community theater and be a nurse. If one goes into Hollywood acting and wants big time movies and such, then one has to give up a lot of privacy, it is an exchange necessary (a plus?) to the business if one wants to get to a certain level (like any profession it's a give and take to advance). Does anyone know of an A list celeb that has NEVER given an interview, made a public appearance, or gone on a TV show etc...? (I don't think so)

I would stalk you relentlessly and make it my life's mission to get your autograph
And to get a pic of you sunbathing poolside at your mansion that overlooks that trailer park you landlord over

Seriously, these guys are making hundreds of millions of dollars, so who gives a shit if they bitch and whine about having no privacy. They complain so much about the paparazzi and the fame, when in reality these guys would be NOTHING without the paparazzo and all their fans! They'd have no careers if nobody knew who they were.

That's nonsense, theatre isn't film and going to community theatre with a bunch of amateurs can't be compared to perfecting the art as a professional who has time to focus, access to professional directors, actors, studios..
People do interviews for a variety of reasons, fan requests, promoting their role in a movie so they can get more roles in high quality productions.
You're comparing hiking the pacific crest trail with pacing around in your yard.

Making X amount of money somehow justifies them being stalked and spied on?
Convoluted, fucked up logic. Local "law enforcement" will often tie their hands in these situations, so if someone falls off your roof and hurts themselves in the process of stalking you, you can be at fault for attracting that attention.
You don't give up another right for every dollar you make, they have every right to complain.

Mark Hamill always signs stuff with whacky lines and jokes, so it can be proven authentic and fight forgery. He even has a twitter/facebook account specifically for people to post their signatures to get validated that they are real.
It's also to counteract the people who go around for signatures just to sell them on ebay. He usually wont sign something unless its to a specific persons name because its pretty much a warning sign someone is there just to sell it.

good show, to Hamill.

There's a ton of arguments that go into it.
If you don't want to be known by most of the world you probably shouldn't star in a movie that makes a ton of money world wide.
Movies make you a celebrity if your in good ones. Hell you can be in a reality TV show like the Kardashians. And be super famous.
It's the whole point of it. I kind of think they're dicks as how they made they're money we non celebrities went and saw their movies. Least they could do is sign something. My signature takes all of about 1 second to do. Well far less it's mostly just a sharp j and a than a scribble out with as I have a lot of vowels and Ms.

Well Crystal already say it. I only initial things as it's just an inconvenience to me. JA looks like a star missing a point. But if I were making millions and not signing a damn receipt while paying money off a card. How inconvenient for them. The only reason they have that money is because of the people watching and wanting them to spend 2 seconds to sign something.

Yeah it is kind of fucked up to be honest. I get that it would probably get old real fast getting approached just about anywhere you went, and if they were in a serious hurry for something important then I get saying no, but other than that, just make an effort, man.
These people are rich beyond their wildest dreams because of average janes and joes who plunk down the money to see them. Least they could do is at least go through the motions and sign some shit for some people who want it, or taking a quick picture with them or whatever.

I saw yelawolf live in a small venue. Dopest show I love his music. I ran into him 2 days later at the biggest mall in Anchorage. I triple taked the only reason I noticed was he was wearing the same shit he was wearing at the show. and said "aren't you yelawolf?"
His little douchebag entourage guy was a total dick. I hardly listen to his music anymore and I really liked his stuff. I actually bought radioactive. I just wanted a hand shake maybe a picture. Take 5 seconds for a fan. I stopped buying music after that. Well fuck you too then.

Ya totally. But I still love his songs. Total douche. I love telling this story. When his songs do come up on my Pandora I can't help but jam along.
It took a solid year though to get over that snubbing. Ouch man I wasn't asking for much. Well I didn't ask for anything. I just recognized him. Walking around in the mall in my town.
He's a dick. I still can't enjoy his songs as much as I did. This memory permeates it. Dick.

I was at 5th Ave mall In Anchorage. I was there for something I can't remember. Maybe just browsing maybe thinking I needed something there.
He was walking down a ramp as I was going the opposite way. It's a 3 stair. I double taked as I didn't even really recognize him except he was wearing the same shit at the show. I turned back and said "your yelawolf right?"
His bald nazi looking dude got in my face. We have to be to the airport in 5 minutes. (impossible from downtown that's a 20 minute drive if your lucky) and after I got snubbed off i just said we'll thank you hope you come back that was a dope show. Shrug.
Was super random. I don't listen to his music much after. All though I know basically his entire catalog. So ya I guess a celebrity that I pay to see their work than snubs me I will hold a grudge.

I get what you're saying Rep, I do. And I'm definitely not saying that people are entitled to anything from celebrities. Just that, you know, it would be nice I guess. I mean for people who are into that sort of thing (autographs, a quick pic with a celeb). I personally would just keep going. I'd notice them and be like (inside my head), "hey that's <insert celeb here>, that's pretty cool". And keep on my way. That's what I've always done in the past in my rare celebrity encounters.
But yeah, assuming that this person isn't getting mobbed by a throng of people hounding them for an autograph, or in a private moment (like sitting down at a table for dinner for example) -- if it's like a one on one encounter and someone asks politely for a quick autograph...I don't see the harm.
I'd like to think that I'd make every effort to do so if I was a celebrity...but then again I guess I'll never truly know because I think it's safe to say that I'll never be in their shoes in my lifetime

That's exactly what I did I didn't ask for anything. A handshake would have been OK. I didn't expect anything and I mentioned it hey I know you.
Not announcing it to everyone. I'm not photogenic myself I don't want a picture. Just told him. Please come back to anchorage. We say that to all artists. Now I live in Washington but you will not get a better reception than in Alaska. We're just happy to get any artist that rolls through.
I have quite a few friends that got a lot of weed for artists. Meth and red. Andre nickatina, atmosphere, tech n9ne, etc.
At the end of the day none of us live there as we scattered. But keep bringing music back. Not going to be as big as a major city but the small cities are the most appreciative.

People do have the right to privacy, but if one goes into that profession and thinks they can be completely private that's delusional. Part of the reason they would be famous is because of fans, it's sort of a catch 22 situation. If they weren't being idolized and fawned over they wouldn't have a career (depending on how far they want to go in the entertainment biz). They owe a certain amount of acknowledgement to the fans when out in public. Not to the point of it endangering them or hindering their dinner etc...but at least something if it's possible/convenient for them. They just shouldn't be dicks if people aren't dicks to them.
Is there ANY A-list celeb that does not do ANY interviews, sign autographs (of any kind), or do SOME kind of charity work etc... that requires them to be in a social setting where they are fawned over etc...I would say NO, there isn't. So they do owe some kind of acknowledgement in that way whether they like it or not. So they HAVE to do it at one time or another to get to a certain level.

By the same logic you owe society as well, all your work would amount to nothing without references, the people you're working with, your customers.
How much of your income are you donating to charities? How much time are you spending doing charitable work?
That is an expectation I have of people, within their means, singling out famous actors doesn't make sense, and privacy is one of the most important rights we have. Celebrities are stalked and hacked, earlier it was said they don't have a place to complain about that.
I don't take your positions seriously, you didn't pay for their time, they don't owe you anything.

I paid for some of their time (in an off hand way) by buying a movie ticket or rental. Being in the public eye is part of that job as an actor, like I said, it's kind of a catch 22. Do you know of just ONE A-list celebrity that has NEVER given an interview or NEVER gone to a public event involving them directly interacting with some people?

You're evading the point, I don't care if they choose to do an interview, the point is they have as much of a right to privacy as anyone. No one is justified breaking into their property, following them around, or hacking their emails.
They don't owe their privacy to anyone.

If they are eating dinner with their date, wife or family and you approach, then you are a major dick.. If they are hanging around the bar, and they seemed amenable, I would try to talk to them and see what happens. I have watched their good movies about 40 times. If I talked to Robert Deniro, or Harvey Keitel or Dustin Hofmann or Edward Norton ever and they decided they might talk to me for 5 minutes, I swear they would talk to me for 15 minutes, I would never ask them for their autograph.

I agree here 100%.
They don't owe their privacy to anyone.
Not entirely, but a certain amount must be "given up" if they want to attain a certain level in their chosen career. How else would they be stars if not for the fans?

I would still like you to name just ONE celebrity that did not give autographs and do social things to get to a certain level in that business. I don't think its possible. Once they are an established A list celebrity they can pretty much not do any interviews etc...but that might put a damper on their career. Some people have been ruined by interviews due to their true character showing through.
Everyone loved them but they turned out to be dicks. I went into nursing to help people and contribute to society in that way. Acting in movies helps people escape reality for a moment in time, it is magical when one is entranced by a good movie, song, opera etc....performers are actually helping people in ways they don't realize sometimes. (imho) I think it comes down to a case of "biting the hand that feeds" at times.

Interviews are public not private, they're also voluntary.
We're talking about two different things here homes

Is there any actor/actress that has NEVER given one public appearance and never ever shook hands or given an autograph while being very famous and an A-list celebrity? (I'm going to say no) I don't think it's possible, it would be contradictory to the very thing they are trying to do! It seems to me that is part of the draw of celebrity life, the public adulation and applause/attention.
I can see how after many years of signing autographs and shaking hands etc...it might get frustrating and bothersome, but there seems to be absolutely NO WAY one can get "famous" and be an A list high profile celebrity without shaking hands and signing autographs. So they owe their fans some amount of attention on order to get to a point where they can say fuck them! LOL!

I don't think I'd ask for an autograph in a random encounter type situation with someone famous. Just seems awkward.

I'm saying that there has to be a certain amount of privacy given up to attain a certain level of celebrity status. That would imply that the actor/actress that desires complete privacy and doesn't want to sign any autographs/shake hands/be approached in public (reasonably, not interrupting dinner etc...) probably won't get very far in the biz (when starting out at least). It seems like a contradiction to the job to be completely and totally private. I know a pretty famous guy who is close friends with clooney, I'll ask him when I go to Texas what his take is. He has been around the biz enough to give an informed answer. (Tommy Hinkley)
