How long will mushrooms grow before rot sets in
    #23840917 - 11/17/16 08:32 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I have 5 brf 1/2 pint cakes which are starting to pin after 2 weeks of consolidation ( about half inch in size now )  but I am going on a vacation for 10 days and unfortunately am unable to find anyone to birth and watch the cakes while I'm gone.

Through doing some research I learned that RR is a very big fan of invitro fruiting (it really seems to work!), should I scrape off the top layer of verm and let them fruit in the jars or wait the 10 days until I'm home to birth and then move to a sgfc. In doing this I'm worried that by 10 days, the fruits will have rotted thus ruining the cake.

I also, if possible, would like to not do anything that would damage that cake.

Thank you guys so much! So excited to be seeing results in my first grow already.

For me, nothing has ever put outnumbers like simply fruiting in the jars.

I had a Koh Samui cake that I thought was no good to spawn, so I let it sit. It turned out good. Harvested 4.5. Added water to the jar for a day, rinsed, back in the jar it went. Rinse and repeat, for SEVEN flushes.

Obviously yield went down with each one, but shit.

The cakes will be done dry when you get back. The mushrooms literally take every drop of water out of the cake.

Hell, I have three jars invitro fruiting right now

Thank you so much Moabfighter!

So just scrape off verm, do I put the cakes lid side down on a rack so that the cakes can grow up into the jar and have more room, or just leave it as is?

Again, thanks a bunch. First grow and first post so this is all new/awesome

Hell if at all possible I suggest starting your fruiting cycle, if you have pins popping up, not knots but actual pins i suggest putting into SGFC before your leave and allow to fruit. There is not much maintenance after fruiting has started. 10 days will be about the time from your pins growing larger to the mushrooms breaking veil. My guess would be by the time you got back you will have some nice fruits waiting to be picked.:yougoodjob:

PS. Rot wont set in until about 10-15 days after the mushrooms break veil.

Leave them as they are. Dont molest your cakes. Do a little rubbing of the dry verm layer, but nothing crazy. I always leave half of it to hold some moisture in. Leave the cakes as they sit now. Add water to your jars, all the way full, let them soak a whole day, then drain through the inoculation holes.

I respectfully disagree with the poster above.
I wish more people would try fruiting BRF cakes in the jar. The shrooms may look funny, but it's extremely efficient in terms of space and yield. Also don't stack your jars OP. THey need to breath through your 4 inoculation holes.

Would soaking in the water for so long not cause water logging and abort pins?

Respectfully,
How would fruiting within the jars create more space and yield lol? I do not know any evidence that supports that. Fruiting BRF cakes in an open SGFC seems to get the best space = better yield.

If you don't soak more than a day, you'll be alright. How? I don't know. Maybe my SGFC is no bueno, but the only time I've ever gotten more than an 8th per cake per flush, Was fruiting in the jars. I'll try to find a pic hang on.

Will growing in the jars while I'm on vacation damage the cakes at all since it's so packed in there, poor little guys. The reason I ask is because I'd like to, when I get back, move these cakes into my sgfc ( if possible ).

Thanks again for all the input and nice jars Moab!!!!!

Nice pics, I see what you may be talking about. They do look pretty thick.

I still feel you could get more from a SGFC, though if not made within a 'working' range it won't be to well. Like my friend has had the same experience as you with SGFC yet he tried different teks till he had twice as much as he had been getting!

OP you should be fine if you only have very small pins forming. By the time you get back they might still be fruiting, if not just finishing.

Sorry just to clarify if I may, I am taking off about half the Verm, soaking the cakes in the jars then draining through inoculation points, then when I get back I birth them again and put in sgfc?

Should I remove any pins to reduce the number of aborts caused by letting them soak for a day? I'll send a picture of what how matured the few pins are.

Sorry to be a question box btw, first time grow and you guys are genius' so I figure I should ask.

Your tap water is just fine.

I'm actually soaking two cakes right this second, just for you. I'll show you it's pretty efficient, start to finish.

Oh! After they're dunked should I start them on a 12/12 light schedule with a 6500k bulb( indirect light right? ). Or since theyre still in the jars do they go back to the shelf?

Thanks
