Lock-picking 1

So I recently locked my key in my office at work, which was slightly embarrassing but luckily my boss showed up with a spare key before I broke out the steel mallet.
In the meantime I was trying to pick the lock with metal rods and paperclips and a screwdriver. Had no luck but I think I understand the principle or pin and tumbler locks, and have always been curious about lock-picking from a problem solving perspective.
I know there is at least one locksmith here, but I forget who. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on what I should be buying as a beginner. I know that you usually get what you pay for, and I do have some cash I could drop, but don't want to spend money when I don't really know what I'm looking for.
Do bump keys actually work?
Any brands or material I should be looking for/avoiding?
Should I just get a padlock to learn on, just use doors around the house, or buy a special learning lock with the clear plastic or changable pins?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I dunno how much value my advice would really have. I taught myself to pick locks, I don't make a habit of it but my grandma lost a key to the drawer for her desk that had all her pictures and stuff. I got pretty good at it (to the point that having the key would be pointless) but it wasn't a high security lock so I dunno how long it would take me fiddling around with one before I got that open. I would guess I could get into most basic locks if I really wanted to.
Bump keys do work, assuming the lock isn't bump resistant. Though they might be illegal to carry around in some places or under a catch all clause of "burglary tools". Then again, a professional lock pick kit would probably be no different .
Everyone learns things differently. If you can visualize what you're doing in real time then a see through practice system might be more beneficial to you, but since you won't be able to see in a legitimate lock it might be better to just learn by feel only.

Yeah I'm not going to be carrying them around, so that is not a concern. I guess I should just find a shitty lock with some play in it and work my way up to more challenging ones.

If already have a prybar, sledge, and cutting torch and I don't steal now. Locks aren't what's preventing me from becoming a burglar.

Well if you're not carrying it around, it's going to be as useless as the key you left at home

Mang, there is this really common brand of combo locks and a good hack online for them I can't remember atm to fucking high. I got really good at opening them in middle school, so good I would pop and swap them all the time so ppl couldn't get into their lockers aha.

It's pretty easy to improvise lockpicking tools once you understand exactly what you need to do

If I were you, I'd practice on a lock using just lock picks...get to the bump keys after you have managed to pick a few locks the old fashioned way!
That's how I learned, anyway: I got locked out of my house after school. Rather than wait the hour or so until someone got home, I started trying to pick our lock. Used a small flathead screwdriver as a torque tool, and a hairpin for a bouncer. Took me about 45 minutes the first time. I was able to get that down to 10 minutes after a couple days

yeah I have access to a machine shop and all kinds of scrap metal. I was actually in the middle of making a pick with a small strip of steel when my boss showed up. Maybe I will see how I can do with that first and at least that will give me an idea of what I need. a paperclip just didn't have enough tension to lift all the pins at once. I could get the first few but not set any that I could tell, and when I tried getting the back ones it would bend too much.
I used to be able to crack those locker locks in high school. More interested in pin and tumbler atm.

Yeah this is a simple handle lock but the frame of the door extends past the edge, so that wasn't possible without doing damage.

I didn't leave the key at home, I locked it in the office.
I'm not going to carry picks everywhere. Possibly I will throw them in my car toolbox, but that is just as likely to get me in trouble should I ever get searched as it will save the day.
More interested in it as a problem solving exercise like I said. I am a hoarder and so are my employers, locks are not in short supply. I could have smashed the handle off with a hammer and put on a new one, or cored out the lock and nobody would have cared.

Just look up dirty lock picking.
It's pretty easy to open a door or locked cupboard with a pair of paper clips.

I won't go into detail about picking locks because I belive that it is a skill that not everybody should have. But if you understand the principle of a pin tumbler lock get yourself some spring steel and you should be able to work it out.
The picture above is fairly accurate but it's missing the second set of pins.
And not sure on the laws where you are but here it is illegal for even a locksmith to have picks in their vehical unless they can prove they are on the way to or from a job.

Those pics are from morrowind so that is surprising they are even remotely accurate. I guess not that surprising, Morrowind was the shit

It's not sorcery.
I understand how it looks. Like I said I don't care about opening doors, just seems like a neat skill to have in a fix.
I should have some spare time at work tomorrow I will bust out some tools and give it a go.

Start off with one of these

I'd use these to the pick the locks at schools and such so I could skate at the schools without jumping fences n shit. That was many moons ago tho.

What is the knob for just to change the tool?
Also you would need a tensioner too, right?
