What causes aborts? * 1

What causes aborts?

I'm nursing the second flush of my first, 4 pftek cakes, and have noticed that, A: some cakes are starting to pull away from the others as far as rate of growth goes. - this seems probable since the cakes were made directly from spore syringes and so they each have their own hodge-podge of genetic diversity going on, but I'm curious if ya'll have other theories.

But B: the cakes seem far more prone to aborts than the original 1st flush. I'm curious if anyone perusing these posts has noticed this w/ multiple flushes and/or noticed that certain conditions lead to them?

These shrooms are in a pretty cool environment in a SGFC, but PLENTY of people have mentioned that cool temps are fine - the temps slow growth but lead to 'meatier' fruit. I haven't tried growing in warmer temps yet so I personally don't have the firsthand experience as to what a "meaty" vs non-meaty shroom are like. Plus, I suspect that when a lot of the experienced cultivators are posting pictures they are really sharing the cream of their crop and not exactly representing what n00bs should expect to see on their 1st grow.

I guess I'll also mention that what I'm perceiving as an "abort" is a pin w/ a few days growth, that suddenly stops increasing in size and turns dark/blackened. Meanwhile, other shrooms/pins seem to do just fine.

Thanks for the info d00ds.

I was talking with pastywhite earlier today about aborts. I had a ton on my cakes, which were loaded with shrooms, but still like 40% abort made me sad. He had this to say

Pastywhite~
Most of the time aborts are due to either poor conditions or the substrate simply cannot support the pinset. In your case I would suggest the latter. Great stuff

In my case it put on WAY more pins than the substrate could simply supply with food and water due to it being a pint cake. Some of it could have been the conditions. If I work on them my abort rate might go down some. I am guessing the cake makes more pins than it needs, genetically programed to account for aborts, from environment. So it does its thing knowing its going to loose some, but then it doesn't loose near as many as it was expecting. So it then works on the best pins it has and does not supply others with food or water for the better of some. Now this is just how I am taking it, I to want to learn about this as FUCK aborts. All I saw was failure in them, not success in the large numbers of ones that made it.

They are not dumb organisms..they will use more food n water for certain fruits if need be to reach the ultimate end goal which is spores...this is natural selection.

Other causes are your fault like letting them dry up or drown or just conditions shit...I'm drunk.

1) lacking moisture (on, or in substrate)
2) too much moisture (on, or in substrate)
3) over-misting young mushrooms. Young pins abort easily.
4)

Aborts are natural, I even find them on wild cow dung sometimes, it's just that the mycelium would rather support mushrooms that are closer to sporulation, just to be sure it continues spreading genetic material through the world. This sometimes means giving all the moisture and nutrient support to the larger fruits, leaving smaller less developed fruits to die off, for the greater good of course.
(side note: the majority of a flush aborting is not natural, that means you fucked up.)

Usually because there's not enough room for every mushroom to grow so some have to abort. Some students left behind
