Help me find my rhythm? Small fruits/low yields
    #23838738 - 11/16/16 12:48 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

So I've been dabbling with cultivation a bit over the last couple of years, though have just really taken it seriously over the last six months or so.

After a couple relatively successful monotubs from shooting spore syringes into grain jars, I upped my game and got into agar work.

I started to 'nocc grain jars either using wedges or LI, and my jars always look beautiful and smell clean. All work is done in front of a flow hood, and I'm very meticulous with sterile technique. I don't think I'm dealing with contams.

I typically use five myco qts to a brick of coir, two qts verm, and 4.5 qts water. I originally used four quarts of water, but the coir never seemed quite to field capacity and a bit dry, so I upped to 4.5qts when using the bucket tek.

I let the sub colonize with the holes in my 66qt tubs taped, then after a week to 10 days, stuff the two lower holes (1 7/8 " hole saw) on each long side as tightly as I can with poly, and the single upper hole on each short side loosely.

I've used ambient light from a window, and I've used 6100k fluoros - no huge difference either way.

The main problem I'm getting - my pinset is usually awesome, though my first flushes usually produce very small fruits with total yield between 3-4oz at best, sometimes lower. Subsequent flushes produce bigger fruits, but ultimately total yield is fairly low after ~3 flushes.

At first I was writing it off as the genetic luck of the draw. But after probably ~20 tubs over the last several months, five different varieties, clones and MS cultures, I'm still not seeing the results I'd expect. I see people get awesome first flushes with MS, 6+ oz with dense canopies of beautiful fruits.

Am I still simply having the shit-end of the stick with genetic luck?

Part of was/is leaning toward moisture content of the substrate - and that possibly I'm over saturating with 4.5 qts of water per brick of coir. But even when the sub seems on the dryer side, I'm still seeing these tiny, short fucking fruits.

If there's anything I've left out that could be a factor, let me know.

Here's pics of the most recent pitiful first flush. This is actually the worst one I've had lately as far as fruit size goes. This is mexicube from a LI culture that was 7ish transfers on agar before making the LI.

Sorry for the length of the post, wanted to lay out as many details as I could.

Looks ok from my seat.
I'm no mono tub pro, but I thought an ounce per quart was a pretty standard goal.
I hope you find what are you after man.  Keep up the good work.

If your getting close to an oz per quart of spawn your on par with the norm. Have you tried varieties like KSSS and Orissa India? They tend to yield larger fruits in my experiences.

I wouldn't worry about the size of fruit so much as long as your technique is on point, which it seems from above post.

Seems to be genetics most likely. Try cloning to agar if you are serious about your yields with a specific mushroom.

Other than that your technique and process are great, monotubs are my favorite.

Either way, it's a pretty huge pin set!  What temp are they grown at?  A bump in ambient might help with size...

I do ultimately end up with more than a dry oz per quart of spawn by the end of the tub's lifespan, but I suspect I may let my tubs go a bit longer than most.

I tried KSSS and ended up with the short, wide weird fruits that were incredibly difficult to harvest. May try it again, and will give OI a run someday.

I have tried several clones thus far, however I may have taken poor clone choices. I do have one clone culture that has performed okay initially, so we'll see.

Haha thanks, and of course, Hofmann!

The room that my tubs are in doesn't go below 69° and never above 73°. I could bump temps a bit and see what happens. And thanks, I usually get pretty good pinset, here's another tub currently pinning that I guarantee is going to produce micro-shrooms, but the pinset is still impressive:

Everything looks good, only thing I would change is maybe use 1/2 quart more water. Other than maybe genetics, would be water supply. But with ms, smaller fruits are in favor of more potency per weight than larger ones. Since potency varies between fruits with ms you'll find odds are in your favor. For instance, you eat 3 large fruits and one is really weak, or you eat 12 small ones that weigh up the same as the 3 large fruits and 2 or 3 are weak. You'll trip harder off the smaller ones even though the weight is the same

I'm juggling a shitload of dishes at any given time in order to continue this quest, just was thinking maybe I'm doing something fucking wrong at this point to continuously get such small fruits. But I'll keep plugging away

I'll bump up another 1/2 quart on a couple tubs and check it out. I suppose it is genetics at this point, because I don't know what else it could really be. Under the mantra of a-cube-is-a-cube, I haven't been too concerned with variety, but ultimately perhaps I need to get my hands on stronger genetics.

I feel you on the potency of smaller shrooms, definitely. No shame here, but I literally fucking pissed myself on my last dose which consisted of smaller fruits (lol) - potency hasn't been an issue at all. And I could care less about growing monsters, but some of these tiny shrooms are an absolute bitch to harvest.

Luck of the draw, I suppose.

Thanks for the input!
