Anyway to automate a bulk substrate or monotub setup?
    #23837937 - 11/16/16 07:36 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Howdy!  First let me say thank you for your awesome community, because of you guys and gals I was able to get two really healthy runs using the modified BRF PF-TEK method, I can't remember the exact name of it but someone on here basically built the fruiting chamber/tub with clay pellets on the bottom, about 2" inches of water and air stones providing humidity and pushing out the stale air through holes.  I come from the hydroponics world so I have plenty of air pumps, clay pellets and air stones and I loved not having to fan/mist the setup everyday.  It gave great results but I realized that if I had used a bigger area of inoculation I would have had much more mushrooms.

So it's been a while since I've fruited anything but currently have a bunch of jars inoculated in BRF/VERM.  And it got me thinking, is there anyway to make a bulk substrate or monotub type setup that's fully automated?

A dailed in mono is automated.

Stay away from air pumps and clay stones. That's like so 1990s

Bigger area for inoculation??? What's that mean?

Leave all your planet knowledge with plants. Mushrooms are completely different.

Haha I had no idea I was so far behind the curve.  And I guess what I meant with the bigger incolucation area was that if the jars I used were bigger I would get bigger mushrooms because they had a larger food source to draw from.

I think my terms are all screwy so my bad on that.  Guess I'll look into monotub setups more.  Sorry for the silly question heh

Heh literally asking how to automated an automated thing. I should probably do some more research.  Sorry about the silly question, go search function

Larger jars/substrates dont equal larger mushrooms... That's plant logic :p

What can I say, I love me herbal beauties, hard to get out of that mindset sometimes.  I learned the hardway the first PFTEK I did by adding waaaaay too much light.  Keep reminding myself that more is not necessarily better when it comes to mushrooms.

About a month ago I played around and inoculated pint size jars with Z-Strain. There is a reason the Tek calls for 1/2 pint jars, the medium in the bottom of the jars tends to become to compact for the mycelium to colonize. I had to birth the pint size cake as it had stalled do to this reason. I also was wondering if it would produce larger fruits. The cake is currently fruiting and sadly the fruits are the same size as the 1/2 pint cakes produce, and has produced approximately the same amount of pins this first flush. It may produce more flushes due to having an increased amount of nutrients, time will tell. As of right now I see no benefits from having used a larger cake. It took longer to colonize, which I had to birth 2/3's the way through and it takes up more room in my fruiting chamber.

light should be 12/12 6500k daylight spectrum. ive used window light when i was younger:thumbup:

I worked in landscaping for awhile and the only thing i really 'brought' over into mycology was a good understanding for field capacity.

CAGNEY

I use pints for mine. I use WHOLE brown rice, not flower. Have to soak and expand rice, but worth it, takes about 24 hours. 2-3 times as much boiling water on it. At some point between 6-12 hours drain and dump boiling water on it again. Let sit a full 24 hours. If rice is still not fully expanded, happens some times, put on stove and bring to a boil. Then check your rice CONSTANLY, will go quick, like couple minuets. Then dump and cool in sink fast. I usually get away with dumping boiling water on them 2 times. Mix 2:1 rice to vermiculite. They colonized and consolidated in 3 weeks for me. Was loose enough to give a shake at 30%. No compaction in bottom. I just shook 3 loose and expanded to quarts for mono's and this recipe looks like its going to work for that as well.

I got NICE flush that I harvested today. 4 cakes about 324g wet.

Those are looking beautiful mate! Yea I could see whole rice working, appreciate the tip. Using the rice flour, the bottoms in my jars were almost rock solid. Looks like you're going to get a little weight off of those.
