Tyvek substitute??

I just bought some pint jars from Target to test out the other syringe I have sitting in the fridge. My question is this, with regards to using the tyvek material for gas exchange. Can you use an ordinary cotton ball inside the hole as a substitute?? Just curious if that's even worth trying. Thanks!!

polyfil gets used a lot, just dont let it get stuffed down all the way to the substrate and make sure it is stuffed well to block up the sides.

If using the PFTek with organic flour is it worth having the gas exchange hole in the center of the jar, or is that more of a WBS or other tek??

i think the greater gas exchange is required from seed teks and not the pf. pf you will usually have a verm layer and noc holes in the lid that allow gas exchange while the verm blocks contams. just make sure you wipe the jar before you put the verm layer on so theres no butrients up the sides. This is all assuming you dont have tape on the noc holes which i think is nonadvantageous. you will see far quicker colonization without the tape.

Yeah...I made the mistake of taking the tape off of the holes, but leaving the tin foil lid on. I was getting hardly anywhere after 3 weeks and finally took the foil off and they began to really take off.

I keep checking mine since I have this one I'm somewhat worrying about. I don't think it's mold, but it's kind of a greyish-green color in an area where mycelium is growing. So, I wouldn't think it was mold due to that reason, but still I want to keep a watchful eye on it.

Also, I've noticed that my substrate seemed to have shrunk and it's not pieced together too well in some areas of some jars. I know there is enough moisture in there, maybe too much, but will this affect the colonization finalizing??
