Rye berries inoculated with q tip covered in Thailand KS spores from a print in mycobag with filter patch. Mixed fully colonized rye berries with kowanite and let fully colonize. Currently in fruiting chamber with pins popping up by the minute.

What's your fruiting chamber look like? The mycelium seems like it's either fighting some bacteria or could use more FAE. Congrats on your first grow though! Next time, try using a plastic liner (like a trash bag) in your tray before adding the substrate and spawn; it will shrink with the substrate as it begins to dry out and helps prevent side pins.

Nice primordial growth! Not to sure of the Q-tip method for inoculation, but hey if personal methods work they work. Try looking into agar for inoculating your rye grain next time, might save some time!
All in all looks good
PS. Would suggest going some sort of casing on top of the mixed rye/kowanite after it has consolidated (3-5days). Casing layer will hold moisture and trap in evaporating water for the growing mushrooms to come, especially in trays. And be sure to get good free air exchange to get healthy fruits, at the pinning stage

Next time I'm definitely lining with a trash bag and I also got some deeper aluminum trays to try out. I have 2 rye berry bags that are about 95 percent colonized so I will be adding them to kowanite soon. I agree I am going to also try a tray with casing this next round. I also am going to try the pop corn Tek soon have everything ready just need time. I acquired 4 spore syringes penis envy, penis envy uncut, pes Hawaiian, and golden teacher and plan on knocking up some popcorn jars with one of each next weekend. Thank you so much for your input!

I just misted pretty heavy before those pictures were taken that's why the side pictures of the tray look wet and kinda funky. Hopefully im not having a bacterial problem!!! I already had to deal with that this last summer on my first rye berry mycobag attempt. They colonized beautifully until it got to 50 percent colonization then this beige sludge/slime appeared in the bottom corner of the bag and eventually turned the whole bag into a ball of gunk... I kept it isolated for 4 months just to see what would happen lol

Nice job! Might see if you can get a little clearance between the SGFC and the walls it's close to to improve FAE a bit. All in all, great job! Excited to see your fruits!

It's amazing how fast these things grow once they start pinning! This is the coolest/most interesting hobby I have ever had! I just wish I would have started doing this a long time ago... Got some petri dishes and agar ordered. I'm really looking forward to experimenting with isolation.

Next time use a black plastic liner in your pan to prevent side and bottom pinning.
But nice pins well done

I feel exactly the same First try growing mushrooms, first pins should start to show in a few days; and also just ordered petri dishes; quite funny.
Good luck to you!

You can also try bottom/side watering as an alternative to dunking. Essentially pouring water in the pan along the sides where the substrate is pulling away from the container. It's a bit easier, but I'm less sure on how much water you should pour in.

Mixed up another colonized rye berry mycobag of Koh Sumai's with kowanite today. I'm hoping I timed it right so when my first tray is done fruiting this new tray will hopefully be fully colonized and I can put it in the SGFC to initiate fruiting. Just to let you guys know I did put a liner in the tray this time as you all suggested! Thank you so much for all your help, support and feedback.

I really thought about it but I ran across a couple threads that said it was bad so I ended up just leaving it. It seems like they are doing alright on the sides though. They are all poking their caps above the side of the dish now so I think they will all find their way out lol. Thank you for the tip!

Thanks you! Yes I am very proud! Hard work is finally paying off! Kowanite is some kind of horse manure bulk substrate. I read a lot of good things about kowanite so I ordered 2 big bags of it. I'm glad I did these shrooms seem to thrive in it.

It is a very good thing! Happy wife happy life lol! I have always wanted to try growing shrooms she gave me the confidence to finally get started. Plus my wife has never tripped before and I really wanted to experience that with her. My buddy used to grow the Homestead kit once a year so I have tripped quite a few times but he passed away and no one can find them where we live.

I noticed the surface of my cake looked really dry last night and so was the SGFC. I rehydrated the SGFC by misting it heavily especially the perlite in the bottom while I had the tray out for its daily examination lol. After I was done examining I placed the tray back in the SGFC and indirectly misted the crap out of the cake. I think it's what my shrooms wanted because they seem to be noticeably growing by the half hour!

No harm in misting the sub directly.. Unless someone already instructed you otherwise for some reason..
Tripping with your significant other is probably the best medicine for any relationship. Happy tripping!

Agreed. Tripped with my SO off our first batch and it was a really delightful evening.

I could not agree more. Fresh fruit, music, and hippy flipping is one of our favorite things around here.

I have noticed misting directly does not seem to harm anything. I have just read so many mixed reviews about misting directly so I had no idea what to do. Thank you for your advice I really needed it!

My other tray of Koh Sumai's is done colonizing and in the FC. I also started my first mycobag experiment (5 lb. bag with filter of kowanite) yesterday. I checked the mycobag before i left for work tonight and it is colonizing the substrate like crazy! Seems to be a way faster method than trays for some reason?

My 2nd tray of Koh Sumai's rotted on me!? For some reason it stalled so I checked the middle of the cake and the whole middle layer was black! Have you seen anything like this happen?

It's probably mold, man. You said in the OP you used spores as an inoculant. Spore to grain has a pretty high failure rate because prints and syringes aren't made in a sterile environment. You'll want to germinate them on agar and isolate the mycelium from any contaminants if you want consistent results.

I'm sure it was.... The berries almost looked rotten and were covered in fuzz but the manure was colonized beautifully. It was so weird it looked so good. Sucks so bad that tray was looking beautiful I had it in my FC so looks like I got some sterilization to do.

Well I knocked up four jars of pop corn with four different ms syringes (PES Hawaiian, penis envy, penis envy uncut, and golden teacher). I am very proud to say they are 100% contamination free!!! I knocked them up on 12/18 and all are nearly 100% colonized!!! Waiting on some kowanite to get here so I can get these bad boys going! PES Hawaiian rocks btw! It colonized so fast it and has so much rhizomorphic growth! I will post pics shortly!

Pics of only crop of Koh Sumai's I got out of my tray. I guess not bad for my first project lol. I have a mycobag with tiny KS's popping up everywhere but they are growing very slowly with large amounts of metabolites/water building up in the bottom of the bag. I drain it when it starts to build up in the bottom. I definitely like popcorn way better than rye berries! I don't think I will use anything but popcorn for as long as I keep farming cubes lol
