ID(gyms?)
    #23835300 - 11/15/16 12:05 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I found these growing on a mixture of dark wood mulch and sand. Not sure what they are, hoping gyms. Smell very fragrant, sort of sweet, nutty, and earthy. growing in clusters of 2 to several and a few singly. Taking a spore print.

The stem I cut off for the spore print is showing some green color, I'll get a pic of that in a bit.

Maybe Gymnopilus liquiritiae. The pics are hard to be certain of, though. Any greenish bluish bruising? It will not be as apparent as with most Psilocybe species. Can you take some pictures under better light? Neutral background as well.

I recently found gymnopilus liquiritiae and it was really water-logged.

The smaller cap, 5th pic down in first set, appears to have a viscid (sticky when wet) surface ...is this accurate OP?

To the best of my knowledge wood loving Gyms are never viscid while Pholiota frequently are, which is what I suspect you may have there.

A popular test that cuts right to the chase is to taste a small piece (spit it out, don't eat it), Gyms will be very bitter (like chewing aspirin) while Pholiota are typically bland and tasteless.

edit: After another look I can't 100% rule out Gallerina so hold off on the taste test until a TI advises you that it is ok to do.  I do not think those are gyms anyway but wait for another opinion.

I am sure they are active Gymnopilus, the bruising is quite apparent in your newer pictures, of what species I can't be certain.l, generally speaking, microscopy is required for an ID of Gymnopilus to be confirmed at the level of species. They are way too chunky to be any Galerina species and they wouldn't stain green. Pholiota would not stain green either &the gills would probably be darker.
That said, it never hurts to wait for another opinion.

I respectfully disagree with you on pretty much everything you just said.  a) To me the "bruising" looks brown, and non-distinct at that not to mention that most gyms don't bruise anyway.  b) I have seen Gallerinas (as recently as this past weekend) bigger than my hand on several occasions.  c) I just reviewed a description for each commonly found gym species and they all specify a dry cap, which has always been my experience as well.

I live in an area where gyms are the only active to be found and I have spent a considerable amount of time researching, hunting and finding them.  I again stress I mean no disrespect and have tried to base my case on facts.

Anyway, just my opinion ...I think OP should taste a small sample and report back, with the exception of the deadliest Amanitas it is impossible to absorb toxins with a taste test.

No you didn't.

Those caps are not viscid.
Even the deadliest Amanita's are safe to chew a small piece and spit out.
I think OP should chew a small piece and spit it out, also.

Why would I be making this up?  For the record I'm not saying this IS Gallerina, just that I have most certainly seen Gallerinas the size of OP's specimen.  I don't know how they grow in PNW but here in the upper midwest they get quite large I assure you.

I don't think you are making it up, I think that you are mistaken in your ID of Galerina, if the mushrooms in the question were bigger than your hand. I also talk to people all the time who are certain that mushrooms, including species of Tubaria, Agrocybe & Entoloma are Galerina, so it's not at all a stretch for me too imagine that mushrooms have been misidentified as Galerina.

My instincts are to back up everything I have stated with photographic proofs but I really don't think that's the appropriate thing to do. I respect your knowledge as a TI and since you've said you're sure these are Gymnopilus, then that's the final word.  I really appreciate the work you fellas do here and assure you I meant no disrespect with anything I posted, I like to think we're all on the same team when it comes to accurate id's and disagreements should be expected from time to time. Let's see what OP reports back with.

I think they are Gyms.
Are they bitter is the thing here.

I found a whole stump of inactive gums yesterday. Veils not dropped.

I see what looks like milky white "drops" in the gills in one of the images.  I am by far no expert, but thought I'd point that out.

Ok, not trying to stoke the fire again here but this point bugs me too ...OP says he found these on a mixture of wood and sand... I thought gyms only grew on solid wood, no?

They grow in wood chips just fine, so I would assume wood mixed with sand would easily be possible.

I think they are active Gymnopolis as well. The bruising looks apparent and the stipes are consistent with that species.
