i only do wbs because i live downtown and its available at lowes. i like wbs without corn and sunflower seeds. lots of millet/milo.
i did rye once... quick prep time. i didnt see any reasons to switch.

This is kind of a personal question so I will just say whatever cheapest and easier to get ahold of. Personally I strictly use rye berries but that's just me

Either one is fine. There's no definitive answer. Rye is the gold standard of professional growers. WBS is easier for some people to get, but it does have variance in composition depending on brand, while rye is just one thing. If you don't mind ordering from amazon, you can get a 25 pound sack of organic rye berries delivered for a good price.

WBS does vary by brand. My understanding is that you want to look for a brand with mostly millet and/or milo, and with less or no corn and sunflower seeds. I've never used WBS personally though.

Nope prep is a lot different from what I'm told. Use the search function to learn the best way to prep what you're going to use

Looks like 23 bucks plus I think it said 17 shipping for 25lbs so 40 from amazon
I just bought a 20lb bag of Penningtons WBS at Walmart for 7 bucks.

Dumb question. Obviously both are used so its a preference issue. They both work, if you can't get one or the other to work its operator error.
Use what you like and what's easiest and cheapest to get

The only reason you simmer rye is so the water evaporates off the grain which makes drying easier. Wbs I believe you load into the jars still a bit wet

Got a Tek? Prep generally isn't too bad I don't guess. Just skip the simmer?
Anyone else not heat their WBS?

i rinse like a billion times. soak for 24hrs. strain and let drain while i watch porn.

minus the gross ass worm... you can see the grains are really swollen. my finger nail cuts into a grain with no effort. if i press the grain it squishes flat.

If one was easier or better we wouldn't see so many people using one or the other. They're opinions, form your own.

Neither is easier or harder... Except I would argue that rye prep is easier... Except I have nothing to back my argument up. Because I only use rye. Because it's more convenient for me to use rye

I don't think it's a dumb question. When you're just starting out you want to make sure you have the basics down. Kind of like reading chapter 1 of a book. Gotta read chapter 1 before you can read chapter 2, etc. I wondered the same thing because I was curious if one is better for certain situations and the other better for other situations, but after reading thread after thread I concluded that it just comes down to preference and local availability of supplies (unless you are getting your supplies online). Just whichever one you choose, be sure to read up on how to properly use it.

i agree rye prep was slightly quicker and the grain being all the same size makes it easier to have proper moisture content throughout every grain.
but simmering was odd. i love to cook but i was really annoyed with the simmer.

Tbh I never fuck with the simmer. Some people say to simmer for 10 minutes. I just put the heating element up to max heat and remove the pot once it starts to boil. Then I know that they're hot enough to evaporate.
Some could argue that simmering for 10 minutes hydrates the grains more. I don't believe it. It's just an added vector for failure with burst grains

All about what suits you man.
Comeback uses Rye. For me, its easier to drive 5 miles down the road to Walmart and buy WBS. Also note, winter is coming, and WBS is often on extreme sale around these times. Who feeds their birds in the winter? Not many people. So it's on closeout till spring comes back around.
