I don't think it's a dumb question.  When you're just starting out you want to make sure you have the basics down.  Kind of like reading chapter 1 of a book.  Gotta read chapter 1 before you can read chapter 2, etc.  I wondered the same thing because I was curious if one is better for certain situations and the other better for other situations, but after reading thread after thread I concluded that it just comes down to preference and local availability of supplies (unless you are getting your supplies online).  Just whichever one you choose, be sure to read up on how to properly use it.

i agree rye prep was slightly quicker and the grain being all the same size
makes it easier to have proper moisture content throughout every grain.

but simmering was odd. i love to cook but i was really annoyed with the simmer.

Chapter one says pick a grain that's cheap and works for you

Tbh I never fuck with the simmer.
Some people say to simmer for 10 minutes. I just put the heating element up to max heat and remove the pot once it starts to boil. Then I know that they're hot enough to evaporate.

Some could argue that simmering for 10 minutes hydrates the grains more. I don't believe it. It's just an added vector for failure with burst grains

All about what suits you man.

Comeback uses Rye. For me, its easier to drive 5 miles down the road to Walmart and buy WBS. Also note, winter is coming, and WBS is often on extreme sale around these times.
Who feeds their birds in the winter? Not many people. So it's on closeout till spring comes back around.
