Current Events in Syria, U.S. vs Russia, etc?

I have some questions. I'm pretty thoroughly confused about the situation in the Middle East. I read things in the Internet so I'm not completely unaware, but I don't watch TV news because I think it's trash.
From what I understand so far, there is basically a three-way going on in Syria between Assad's government, rebels (some of whom are Kurdish nationalists right?), and ISIS, is this correct?
Why does Putin oppose U.S. intervention and support Assad's government? Is it just because Putin doesn't want the U.S. installing it's own regime in that region so close to Russia?

Syria is a clusterfuck right now. There are multiple rebel groups all competing for power over the government. Many of the rebel groups are actually aligned with ISIS but claim they are separate. Kurdish nationals have taken over the North and are engaged with ISIS and occasionally Turkey.
Putin's government has very close ties with Assad's. Not only can he influence Assad but he also sells him arms. Having Assad replaced would loose him influence in the Middle East. There is also the question of who would replace Assad. Right now it appears as if ISIS is poised to take control if Assad falls. Neither the US nor Russia want that outcome.
This is a pretty cool site if you want to keep up with whats happening on the ground: http://syria.liveuamap.com/

Interestingly, I just provided a link in another post about something totally unrelated, but that link also has a nice summary of Syria in it.
-------------------- I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them. I also attack my side if I think they're wrong. People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.
