Gymnopilus junonius "turns green when cooked in a pan" (Middle Eastern Region, USA)
    #23831670 - 11/14/16 09:39 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

According to Wikipedia, Gymnopilus junonius "turns green when cooked in a pan."

I gave this test a try with a mushroom that may be Gymnopilus junonius. On the cap, the lighter hued parts (buff) turned a subtle pale green. The gills, which were on the dark side of the spectrum (rusty brown), turned a subtle olive color.

Does that fit with other's observations?

How useful of an identification indicator is this test?

(Note: I ate some. It tasted bitter and provided psychotropic effects consistent with psilocybin)

The portion I ate was dried, not fried, and it was not a whole cap, only dime size portion.

I'll see if I can get a photo. Logistics problems may prevent such sharing.

Gotcha. To answer your question, it turning green in a pan is not nearly a good enough method of identification for consumption.

I don't believe Gymnopilus junonius is potent enough for such a small amount to give any sort of effects, to be honest.

So whatever you felt, it was likely to be placebo effect.

Not very useful, especially for us since we can't even see the mushroom.

I understand. That emotion icon I clicked was labeled "angry." But I'm not angry. I'm sober. I really appreciated the feedback, and understand your limitations given the limited info I've provided.

fyi I have personally tried the "frying pan" test on known active gyms and it didn't work, not saying it never works but if it fails once it probably fails often plus who's to say Gallerinas don't turn green in a frying pan? I wouldn't eat any more of those mushrooms until you've had some type of identification done, whether here or elsewhere.

Here are some photos:

Taken from above: this is the type of mushroom in question. This one is still alive but misshapen.

Stems of mushrooms taken three days ago.

Side view of the one still alive.

Spore print taken three days ago. Underside of mushroom from which the print was taken, three days old, drying in the air.

Spore print. Upper side of mushroom.

Air dired, three days old.

What do I have here?

Your mushroom might be an old Pholiota aurivela.

Interesting!

The fresh, mature ones that were not misshapen had the sort of shape and "conspicuous, flattened, wine-red scales" as seen in the top picture here:

I live in northern California and im new to the mushroom world. my friend and i went out to the forest recently and collected some mushrooms. i was just wondering what kind of species and if theyre active or not. and if theyre not active then where would be a good place to look instead of on cow dung?

Re: Pholiota aurivela

Here are some images of Pholiota aurivela for comparison. Note in particular the bisection:

My mushroom at 3.5 days old, but freshly bisected:

Cut and paste this into a browser for viewing (Sorry, I'm struggling with logistics here).
