    #23829417 - 11/13/16 02:37 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Title pretty much says it all. Looking into something interesting to start reading didn't know where too start my thoughts.
Pihkal: A Chemical Love Story.
Thoughts on it, hate it great read? Or recommendations of any sort thank you.

I love reading about drugs.  My dad always asks me questions about ganja.  I started reading High Times and books about cannabis from a young age.  My mom let me grow a small garden under a 250 watt HPS light.

Also looking at some  Terence McKenna. Food of the gods or more so True Hallucinations seems interesting.

McKenna is an idiot who propagates more bullshit and misinformation than any other major figure in psychedelic history.

I turned about 35 or 40 kids onto pot.  I smoked a lot with my best friend who lived down the street.  My best friend turned into an LSD head and made changes I was unaware of.

My mom owns one of them. I forget which though. Aren't both available online in their entirety? Here is what I was thinking of:

They are both good but Tihkal made a bigger impression on me. Partly because I read it first, but I liked the material on occurrence of alkaloids in the natural world.

I'm pretty sure it's just the "Book II" portion of each one that they released freely online (consisting of chemical synths, dosages and brief trip summaries for a bunch of different compounds.) The "Book I" portions are longer articles/chapters on various topics, some autobiographical and some more about drug science or law. Tihkal also has a lengthy appendix of tables on the occurrence of different alkaloids in various cacti.

Food of the Gods is semi-legitimate anthropology with a fairly heavy bias, but at least worth a read. True Hallucinations is mildly entertaining but entirely anecdotal. The rest of his books are pure garbage, as far as I've seen. There may be one or two authored with his brother that are worth a go, though. This is all based on my own memories, though, so maybe even Food of the Gods is trash, but it seemed fairly easy to differentiate the factual research from the speculative extrapolations even for a teenage moron like myself whenever I read it.

If you don't care about the actual syntheses of chemicals and just want the autobiographical stuff, then PIHKAL is a better read than TIHKAL. Things like "My Problem Child", "Plants of the Gods", Stanislav Grof's early books and more recently "Singing to the Plants" (stupid fucking name, but a genuinely solid book on ayahuasca) are the best scientifically minded volumes I've found. I don't mean they're cold treatises or anything, just that they tend to focus on psychedelics as a serious issue of inquiry without leaping into counterculture values and skewing the entire thing.

Grof's first few books are maybe the most interesting, since he had the rare opportunity to experiment with psychedelics and psychotherapy in a time and place in which people tended to know absolutely nothing about either. Unless the man is a lifelong liar, which I sincerely doubt, there are some really fascinating things that come up in sessions with patients who clearly had no preconceptions regarding what they were going through. It's maybe overly Jungian at points, but seeing somebody approach the issue as a scientist and follow the findings rather than leap into psychedelics with a predetermined goal is quite fascinating. "Realms of the Human Unconscious", "The human encounter with death" and "LSD psychotherapy" are all great and can be found on abebooks or other second hand sources for ridiculously low prices. "Acid Dreams" is a good one for the history of LSD, but I have a feeling there are numerous editions based on new information coming to light so go for whatever the most recent version is if you're going to actually pay for the thing.

Some of the shorter Alan Watts pieces on psychedelics are effectively the same kind of things McKenna was aiming at but without the alien/conspiracy element and written rather better. The names should be easy enough to find, but PM me if you care and can't find them and I'll get back to you with titles and hopefully links to online versions.

Different translations, I assume. Johnathan Ott translated a version that I can link here since the thing is apparently in the public domain now.

http://www.maps.org/images/pdf/books/lsdmyproblemchild.pdf

Also, it's actually TIHKAL I was thinking of as far as the non-chemistry related stuff being more interesting. I don't have a physical copy of PIHKAL to hand, but I'm sure it's worth a read as well. The versions on erowid and elsewhere seem to only have the syntheses, so I assume those were made public and the autobiographical stuff wasn't.

There's Grof stuff on abebooks for $3 with free shipping, so definitely grab some of those if you're interested at all. The earlier stuff is all directly focused on psychedelics, but where he went from there is equally interesting even if a lot of it was a result of the law rather than his own natural development.

https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=stanislav+grof&sts=t

Plants of the Gods may be worth buying first hand, since it's a really nice volume with a lot of pictures and you don't want a scuffed up copy. I don't think they ever published abbreviated versions or anything, but check just in case they put out a shitty version at some point.
