Cake questions

Hey there guys, this guy was birthed about a week ago. One or two days ago, the cake was becoming very puffy and white, so I drilled some more holes, and put a fan from afar to introduce some new air flow. Now the cakes are certainly not as puffy, but I noticed some cracking on the cake. Is it too dry now? My overall question is, what do I want my cakes to look like? What are some characteristics of healthy cakes? What are some signs that pinning is about to occur? Also, my cake is beginning to slightly brown/yellow,like the browning in the picture, but does not resemble bacteria.
Thanks

Edit: I did dunk and roll, but most of the verm fell/got blown off from fanning.

Your holes in your fruiting chamber look like you randomly drilled holes instead of a 2 by 2 inch grid. Probably should have cased with vermiculite or one of other accepted casing materials. Trim foil so it is just big enough for the cake.

Huh :/ I followed this PF tek guide which was recommended on reddit. I was told to use moist perlite. This is my first grow, so it was pretty sloppy. What will trimming the foil do, out of curiosity? and any advice on the question I asked..?

Could somebody please help? I'm not getting any feedback anywhere I post this. I need to know what I'm doing wrong/if I'm doing anything wrong other than my hole placement.

Did you roll that in perlite?

Trimming the foil allows for better air flow up through the perlite. Thus giving the cakes FAE at cake level, and if built right keeping RH high at cake surface. I don't know what to make of the "dry looking area".

Me personally. I would attempt to hydrate that area some, see if it comes back. NOW I AM NOT A LONG TIME GROWER, THIS IS JUST SOMETHING I PERSONALY WOULD TRY. Maybe some misting concentrated on that area. If to dry maybe a soak for a couple hours in a bowl of water?

I rolled it in verm, the cake just fell in some perlite. I will try re-dunking my cakes. Thank you.

Looks bacterial. I don't see any verm. Roll once more and wait a few hours before misting so the verm sticks. Then leave it alone. Don't expect much cause bacterial as fuck but you should see a few fruits nonetheless. Be patient. Depending on how long you consolidated you may have a week or two more before pins.

Is it just the discoloration that looks bacterial to you?

No. The yellowing is from drying out. To be honest it looks like trash. You will be lucky to get a few grams from it.

You can but the yellowed dead tissue is going to stay yellow and dead. You do things perfect right off the bat and have few problems. You do things wrong off the bat and in the long run you struggle. That's pretty much how everything in this hobby is. I would dunk it but I would also get started on a new project in the meantime.

Would you dunk it for the full 24 hours? It sucks, cause I thought I was doing it mostly right :/ The only thing I really missed was not placing the holes correctly. My other cake is pinning.

Hole placement is very important, along with the 4 to 6 inch of perlite. The holes allowe gas to flow out as well as evaporation. The set up controlles it for you and cakes don't dry out. I would only dunk a few hours. Keep a close eye on the bad area. Next go around make sure you follow/ build FC to the T! Do not obstruct the air currents that come up from the perlite. As evap occurs and gas leave fc you get air pulled up from the bottom. This helps the flow of FAE. At least that's how I understood it. Rolling in fine vermiculite is important for cakes. Helps hold moisture so they don't dry out, also they tend to pin better. Just look at my pics of my cakes.

Yeah drilling your holes in a 2in grid pattern on all 6 sides makes a huge difference....if I was you I would start a new project following a tek from this site! This place has the best info, and people that know what the hell they are talking about....
