42% of Canadians are functionally illiterate...
    #23828335 - 11/13/16 09:05 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I had a store meeting today and they brought that up.... It's insane.

Functionally illiterate means equal or under a grade 5 level of literacy. How fucked up is that?

Also more impressively, if that number dropped to 41% it would add 32 BILLION dollars to the economy...

So I was thinking about you Americans (like I always do), an extra  1% literacy score would add like 320 billion to the US economy. You guys could pay up your debt in like 10 years is an extra 10% of your population could learn how to read better......

Isn't sad and fucking insane at the same time????????????????

Do you read?
How many books do you read per year on average?
You may choose only one

2 or 3 sounds right, but I assumed you mean "how many books did you finish?".  I pick up at least 50, but I rarely am compelled to follow through to the end.

I also read the newspaper once or twice per week, but am more of a skimmer with that too, and lots of technical manuals, trade rags, and stuff like that.

Thats really sad thou man, how is Canada that illiterate? doesnt seem accurate in my opinion. Thats almost half the population!

I didnt read a lot in the past (except for college), but now my job has a time where i can read for fun, and Ive been hooked on this Moonworld Saga books as well as Dollar Tree books too.

I love the imaginary worlds and Characters that fiction books create. Before i thought "fiction books are dumb, it isnt even real". But now i realize that it still *is* real, in my imagination :awesome:

It would be a pretty weird US if the citizens couldnt read

I dont think the number of books one reads is the correct litmus test for an assessment for literary absorbtion per year. I read a few books each year, but that is a grain of sand in comparison to news, short stories, posts, blogs, informational websites, etc... If you were to calculate all of that information, even excluding that which not helpful in anyway (ahhhhem shroomery trolls)... and equated that to books read, I would be in the thousands.

For some reason content does make a difference. Obviously the functionally illiterate numbers in the US is lower, but when 90% of your reading material is facebook posts, and shroomery pub trolls, you are probably costing society money.

yes, i read, no shit...people do not invest enough in it, people whom are of a certain type...and that type is old and grey.

the younger population reads more, but, i imagine there is still a good amount of retarded kids out there that do nothing but play. oh well. the literacy will go up as the older generation dies off, seeing as literature is kinda coming back into style (for some. it's a waxing & waning, sort of thing....sort of thing) but it's really the education that needs to make more headway in getting kids more interested in literature...i say drop Canadian lit, or just stick to the more unorthodox Canadian authors...our curriculum is dumb-dumb jimmy joe-joe shabadoo.

I read about 7-10 books a year. My wife challenged herself to read more this year and is on like 32 since January.

If I spent less time on here or doing some other stuff I'd probably finish more books, but either way.

Finally finished The Republic this year. Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead too. Those last two were easy reads, but Ender's Game itself was one of my favorite books to ever read. Real good story.

My Dad has a lot of family who are hillbillies. The older groups of them are often illiterate, including my dad's Uncle who lives with him currently. Cool guys, but they grew up in isolated communities and went to work at a young age and stuff. My Grandma can read though, not a lot of them. The first time I realized he (my great uncle) couldn't comprehend what the number 1 billion really was or couldn't read even the ads in the newspaper that blew my damn mind.

I read around 10 books a year more or less. When you are able to picture what the author is describing just like a movie in your head it can be far more enthralling than any movie.

I used to read loads, like probably 20-40 books a year, but in University I've been doing a lot less personal reading, and more listening to audiobooks. Now I probably read about 6-10 books a year, but once classes finish I'm sure the numbers will go back to 20 or so.

Dude, I watched the movie a few days ago. Beautiful movie. I don't say this often about book to movie conversions, however they completely flopped it. The acting was great, the visuals were great, but they just abridged the story so much that they completely 'ruined it' (in the sense that the movie didn't live up to it). It's better as a companion piece to the book than it is a movie by itself.

Definitely suggest reading it. The story is way more in depth in the book. They completely skip over some really important aspects of the book that makes the book such a deep book to me.

I read a lot. I spend a ton of times browsing forums and Facebook during the day, and at night I read a book for 2-4 hours before falling asleep. I tend to read between 40-70 books per year all depending on the length of the books.

I'm one of those people who can vividly picture in my head what the author put into words. My favorites are historical fiction, techno thriller and with horror and sci-fi as sub interests.

I read studies and nonfiction articles. I dont read very much fiction at all.

I wouldnt doubt that that statistic is fairly accurate.

I remember in like grade 4 and 5 some kids still read those grade 1 books with like 1-5 words per page. And all through highschool if we had to read out loud most people couldnt didnt know alot of words that arent every day words but a highschool student should still know them.

some people took like 5 minutes a page. It really surprised me.

I read every night. Usually about 50 pages, sometimes more if i read in the afternoon, sometimes less if i'm busy.

I'm currently reading the 3rd book in the Inda series (King's Shield) by Sherwood Smith. I pretty much only read dorky fantasy. Ocassionally i'll venture into short scifi stories with stuff like Calahans Crosstime Saloon

This statistic sounds like bullshit to me though. How big was the sample size? Did they count writing/grammar skills? or was it just a vocabulary or comprehension test?

Edit. Just counted, i've read 37 books so far this year. Most of them over 500 pages. And thanks for reminding me to update my sig. If anyone wants to trade books lemme know

Jobs are finite. You don't just magically add more jobs because people are smarter. Why do you think there's so many people with college degrees that are having to settle? All more educated people means is that more educated people have to take the jobs that were once held by less educated people and the even less educated people are fucked. There's not extra money. The only thing that changes is the division of the money.

I used to read constantly.  now I don't read at all. I listen to podcasts instead.  studies show you retain info just as well from listening as reading , and I can work out or clean at the same time and don't need to tilt my head down to look at the book.

What I'm seeing is Canada is being unnecessarily put on the spot. There are fairly high illiteracy rates everywhere. I'm also curious about the metrics they use in which to measure all this and what variables they account for. I can imagine immigrants who poorly communicate english, and the many undereducated first nations people among the many reservations and frozen white north, would really effect our diversity in literacy skills. Not that I'm saying most of us Canadians are geniuses, in fact I can actually think of a number of people I've met in my life that clearly had some issues reading. Which I just don't understand at all.

many people I work with are writing at a grade 6 level.  but I would call them functionally literate, not functionally illiterate.

they can't write a research paper or university essay, and they don't need to. they read and write at a level adequate to their jobs.

Reading isn't a problem writing is a bit tough sometimes

Who cares though it doesn't matter perfection is bullshit

One problem I have found in life is that nothing is ever good enough for the bad man and maybe those people should look in the mirror

I think alot of people in the western world are at a 5th grade reading level. Most lifestyles don't require more.

I really don't think everyone being at a college reading level woould make a big difference. Internet debates might be more interesting but that's probably about it.

I'm pretty sure close to 42 % of Canadians have a university degree.  I'm sure many of the people this study is calling illiterate are university graduates.

I know because I marked and edited many of their papers.

no I just mean that Marking university students essays and papers (or reading my coworkers documents) I could tell many of them were writing at a grade school level , which is what the study was classifying as functionally illiterate.

to me this is a misnomer. these people aren't illiterate, they can read and write just not at the level needed to academic success at the University level.

I like audiobooks for the same reason, its perfect when you're at work, especially as I don't do background music. Not all books are available though, and the narrator is very important in the overall experience (as much as an actor imo), so for the most part I wind up reading instead.

I can't do audio books while I'm working or doing things. I miss things pretty easily that way. I gotta give my full attention. The only instance an audio book works for me is if I'm driving a long drive, or if I'm lying in bed reading a book simultaneously. I've really only used 4 or 5 audio books in my life though. Helps with old philosophy books, because they can lose my attention easily despite me being interested in reading them, having it read to you kind of keeps me engaged.

I'm a slow reader though. I like to think my comprehension is higher than most readers, but I read half as slow as avid readers. And I'm sure there are many people out there who read twice as fast with twice the comprehension to boot.

Well I think if people had a high reading comprehension and regularly critical of what they were reading yes it would go a long way. Society desperately needs people with more critical thinking individuals. But institutions train people to think one way or another. Having a college reading level does not mean shit if you don't use those skills.

Yes a huge problem is ignorance. Yes it would make a difference. But if people did not critically think there wouldn't be any real difference in our society. We would just argue with eachother using bigger words.

It wouldn't make all the difference, there will always be sufficient ignorance and stupidity.

However, it would make an immense difference if the general population were avid readers (at an adult reading level, twilight doesn't count).

Avid reader isn't the same as reading level. It's completely possible to have an advanced reading level without hardly ever reading a book.

Or at least it only measures one type of intelligence.  you could suck at words and be great at numbers. you might not be able to write a coherent sentence but be able to solve a complex math equation. or you might be able to do neither but paint an amazing work or art or win the world title in mixed martial arts.

So many kinds of intelligence.
