Anyway to answer the op, I've read about 5 books this year, not counting the dozen or so I've listened to on audible.

Edit : just looked, I've listened to 20 books on audible this year.

no I just mean that Marking university students essays and papers (or reading my coworkers documents) I could tell many of them were writing at a grade school level , which is what the study was classifying as functionally illiterate.

to me this is a misnomer. these people aren't illiterate, they can read and write just not at the level needed to academic success at the University level.

I used to read constantly.  now I don't read at all. I listen to podcasts instead.  studies show you retain info just as well from listening as reading , and I can work out or clean at the same time and don't need to tilt my head down to look at the book.

I like audiobooks for the same reason, its perfect when you're at work, especially as I don't do background music. Not all books are available though, and the narrator is very important in the overall experience (as much as an actor imo), so for the most part I wind up reading instead.

I can't do audio books while I'm working or doing things. I miss things pretty easily that way. I gotta give my full attention. The only instance an audio book works for me is if I'm driving a long drive, or if I'm lying in bed reading a book simultaneously. I've really only used 4 or 5 audio books in my life though. Helps with old philosophy books, because they can lose my attention easily despite me being interested in reading them, having it read to you kind of keeps me engaged.

I'm a slow reader though. I like to think my comprehension is higher than most readers, but I read half as slow as avid readers. And I'm sure there are many people out there who read twice as fast with twice the comprehension to boot.

Well I think if people had a high reading comprehension and regularly critical of what they were reading yes it would go a long way. Society desperately needs people with more critical thinking individuals. But institutions train people to think one way or another. Having a college reading level does not mean shit if you don't use those skills.

Yes a huge problem is ignorance. Yes it would make a difference. But if people did not critically think there wouldn't be any real difference in our society. We would just argue with eachother using bigger words.

It wouldn't make all the difference, there will always be sufficient ignorance and stupidity.

However, it would make an immense difference if the general population were avid readers (at an adult reading level, twilight doesn't count).

Avid reader isn't the same as reading level. It's completely possible to have an advanced reading level without hardly ever reading a book.

and vice versa. you could barely be able to read and struggle through a whole library of books if you were determined and patient enough.

Truth. It's a poor gauge of intelligence.

Or at least it only measures one type of intelligence.  you could suck at words and be great at numbers. you might not be able to write a coherent sentence but be able to solve a complex math equation. or you might be able to do neither but paint an amazing work or art or win the world title in mixed martial arts.

So many kinds of intelligence.
