Smoking cannabis may double the risk of a rare condition that temporarily weakens the heart, research has shown.
Known as broken heart syndrome, stress cardiomyopathy mimics signs of a heart attack, resulting in chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness and sometimes fainting.
The symptoms, caused by a reduction in the heart's ability to pump blood, are usually temporary but experts warned they could indicate more serious trouble.
Cannabis users experiencing an episode of stress cardiomyopathy were significantly more likely than non-users to go into cardiac arrest or need correction to abnormal heart rhythms.
Dr Amitoj Singh, from St Luke's University in Pennsylvania, who co-led the US study, said: "The effects of marijuana, especially on the cardiovascular system, are not well known yet.
"With its increasing availability and legalisation in some states, people need to know that marijuana may be harmful to the heart and blood vessels in some people."
The researchers analysed data from 33,343 Americans who were hospitalised with stress cardiomyopathy between 2003 and 2011.
After taking a range of risk factors into account, the study showed that cannabis users were almost twice as likely to develop stress cardiomyopathy than non-users.
Active cannabis use was identified either from information provided by the patient or a urine test.
Cannabis users were also more likely to have a history of depression, psychosis, anxiety disorder, alcoholism or multiple substance abuse.
"If you are using marijuana and develop symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath, you should be evaluated by a healthcare provider to make sure you aren't having stress cardiomyopathy or another heart problem," said Dr Singh.
The research was presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions meeting in New Orleans.

Sounds like another piece of scare journalism, cannabis = death.
Cannabis is a spirit that connects us deeper to our physical bodies, to feel more, greater depths, correlation is this case isn't necessarily negative.

It doesn't cause anal leakage, pregnancy, death, unwanted twin, or a boner lasting for more than 8 hours I gotta waddle into the ER with and calmly explain, so I'll roll the dice.

Just five days ago I developed crushing chest pain that lasted half an hour. This happened within moments of realizing Trump was going to win. I had been high all day. Perhaps I should have gone to the hospital but I was crying too hard at the time to care about that.
Scare journalism, yeah, great explanation.

I always feel like my heart is gonna explode when I smoke weed. It feels way more cardiotoxic then stimulants and stuff to me, but that's probably just weed anxiety.
idk why I always get that, if maybe someone can help it's really ruined weed for me. A benzo helps a little but not enough, or like if I'm tripping and I smoke, but then I don't really feel it as much.

Yeah seriously. There may be some truth to this but almost certainly other factors are at play.
For instance smoking is not good for the body so if you smoke a lot some sort of "chest pains" are not uncommon. Clearly these are different pains then heart issues though.
Shortness of breath? Really? Have these people ever smoked anything before? Shortness of breath is to be expected when you are smoking pretty much anything in excess.

Could it be that alcoholics and or people with depression issues are drawn to cannabis and these things are almost entirely unrelated?...
Same with psychosis. Maybe cannabis brought it out but I bet most if not all of those people would have ended up psychotic eventually...

One other thing, notice how they don't bother mentioning smoking tobacco causes many of the same issues but considerably worse...
I would bet the majority of alcoholics also smoke cigarettes and abuse other substances. Nicotine also makes people depression/ anxiety worse long term.

total bullshit! I've known an older lady who died of "broken heart syndrome" a day after her husband of 50 years died. I swear they will say ANYTHING to discredit the benefits of cannabis and it's positive effects on the human body.

It was a real study- http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/134/Suppl_1/A14100
A certain level of skepticism is healthy. However, blind faith that something is entirely safe/non-harmful, simply because it is widely used and doesn't cause immediate obvious damage, is just as detrimental to drug law reform. They're both two sides of the same coin; Ignorance.

Yes but you have to admit the timing for this is very suspicious and I am not seeing any real data that concerns me, it seems like common sense really.

ROLMFAO its known as a panic attack
People who have issues with depression, psychosis, anxiety disorder, alcoholism or multiple substance abuse and illness like MS and cancer use cannabis to alleviate their symptoms. Which came first the chicken or the egg. Notice how the Reefer Madness Doctors don't point out the people with illness that can't be blamed on cannabis like epilepsy, cancer and MS, who also use cannabis at much higher rates then the general public.
