help me figure out this box thingyy
    #23827529 - 11/12/16 10:39 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

My buddy bought a house and theirs two little boxes about 4 inches by 2 inches on the ceiling in separate rooms.  We have no idea wtf they are.  So we cut one down and ripped it open and it's a small simple circuit that makes no sense to me.  The house was built about 60-70 years ago and they look original to me..  I know it's not a door bell either because theirs already a separate box for it but no buttons so it's useless.

I can't say for sure but it looks like either an old speaker or a smoke detector.  Maybe it's a mic instead!

I'd clean all the paint out of the grill on that thing

Looks like a pickup, maybe your house is a giant instrument, or you're a very tiny person living in a normal sized instrument

I was thinking it looked like something music related too.

OP can you unscrew the front grill piece and get a pic of what is under on that side?

looks like the metal tongue with 2 rivets holding it in place electrically contacts by bending to that brass colored nut thing which was probably wired to a switch to actuate a noise. probably to the door bell switch which might not be there any more id guess

Curious...

Could it possibly be something similar to a doorbell, but not exactly a doorbell?

For instance, a thing to summon somebody.

Like, an elderly person who was bedridden had a button next to their bed to push and that tripped those two to make a noise to summon help.

That's all I got

The original door bell system. Theyve installed a newer one which is the box with no buttons you were talking about.

I take it back, it's a buzzer. the small metal strip underneath should vibrate when electricity is applied

Always wanted to try a PRS, they seem nice but a bit spendy as are most "name brands".

I have always wanted a tele too  I have a strange unique semi hollow that is almost tele like but not really :tongue2: Was a cheap china guitar.

If its a tele with a humbucker in the bridge you should consider trying a P90 bucker out :awesomenod: I love humbuckers and single coils and P90s truly are the best of both worlds.

Yeah, that's just it. PRS is just a name.

I'm ridding of it because it feels like a toy.  It's small and the quality isn't there in the body and neck.  I think this may just be because it's a cheaper SE model (made in Korea).

I was considering a semi hollow tele actually.  I'm still unsure what I will get.  I've shortlisted the standard model just for the fact they are cheap.  Thinline models are the cheapest but they are the 'SE' of telecasters - made in China.  I want quality this time around!

A humbucker tele may happen.

Sadly many brands are just names, there are certainly many with reputable QC but many also charge a ton regardless and even with top end brands I have heard of occasional duds.

I have had some pretty nice Korea guitars, my only bass is from Korea and plays/ sounds pretty good for the price. Honestly the country matters less then the brand IMO, there is plenty of crap made in the US and quality stuff made in china albeit it's more rare with the latter  What price range are you looking at?

Personally I have had good luck with used guitars locally and online but definitely do your research and it's smart to try and try em out first or buy from places with returns.

My favorite guitar is a handmade neck through stratocaster I got from Thailand, won it in an ebay auction for 100$ + 140$ overseas shipping.

They don;t list many auctions any more but if your interested here is a tele from the seller:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antonio-Owl-Dragon-Inlay-Solid-Mexico-Bocote-Electric-Handmade-Tele-Guitar-3534-/351904802879?hash=item51ef29283f:g:4IUAAOSwCGVX~vRK

Beautiful inlays and it plays like butter, I liked the pickups mine came with but upgraded the neck/ bridge eventually. Left the middle for versatility.

Might not be what you are looking for but if you see an auction for something you like definitely watch it at least!

I upgraded the electronics in mine eventually too but for the price it was great, plus if your like me it leaves you more $ for mods + pedals :crazy2:

That's a purty guitar

I'm generally suspicious of expensive instruments, most of the ones I've tested out felt like their $200 counterparts. Of course there are better than average instruments, but it's best to be skeptical in my experience. You couldn't for example, sell me on a $20k guitar however loaded I may be

Doorbell. Current goes through the skinny wire magnitizing it and drawing the thick broad piece towards it. When the doorbell button is released the broad piece bangs off the casing making a noise. Probably made a pretty shitty noise compared to a solenoid and chime plate.

Yeah I really love how their natural guitars look! Incredible inlays and wood grains, love how the nicer strats have wooden pick guards too :awesomenod:

Past a certain price range you don't really gain much I have heard. Some hold their value well or even appreciate but not all of them.

I have even heard certain vintage instruments were considered mediocre in their time but now that they are "vintage" people are re selling em for a ton

That is why I am an advocate of buying a nicer budget instrument and pimping it out. You bond more with it and get a better understanding of how it works.

Here is my strat I got from them:

Next I plan to upgrade the bridge but for the price all the parts seem fine. The middle tone pot is a 6 way rotary switch that selects the pickup config along with the standard 5 way. I think there are like 16 different pickup combos possible total but only some of them wort becouse I messed the mod up somehow. Most of it works though including all 3 pickups at once :crazy2:

I agree about buying a decent instrument and modding it, there is a lot that can be done to tailor an instrument to your taste.

May take the same approach on my cheap violin, upgrade the bridge, nut, tail-piece and strings, maybe find a decent bow before investing in a new violin... that's an iffy though, it may be better to pair the bow with the violin.

Anyways I'm not interested in buying antique instruments sold at 30x their actual value, fuck the hype.

It is a bit different with acoustic instruments though as you can't do as much mods/ upgrades. So you shouldn't spend too much upgrading it possibly as it might be more worth it to buy a nicer but still relatively cheap one. I don't know too much about violins though, it probably wouldn't cost too  much to upgrade the bridge nut tail piece and strings... I have been thinking about getting into nuts/ bridges more myself

:super:

The oldest instrument I have is a classical guitar that says it was made in Madrid Spain in 32' It was my grandpa's guitar and I was lucky enough to inherit it. His son abused it a bit and it sat collecting dust for years but I cleaned it up and re strung it and it plays alright. Going to try and get a nicer bridge and neck nut for it though. I would never dream of selling it,hopefully I have kids to pass it onto one day :stoned:

It shouldn't cost much, mostly concerned with the tailpiece which is nothing.
The strings will run a lot over time, have to experiment with different strings... they run from $60 to like $200 for a set

They say as a rule of thumb, bow should be worth about 30% as much as the instrument, or at least that's the idea with a cello.
Really though I would want to go by the bow itself, within reason.
Will probably budget something like 2k for a new violin and 1k for the bow.

Yeah, heirlooms are another story.
Not interested in someone else's heirloom, might care if its Mozart's, but even then I probably wouldn't.
If it were a family instrument passed down over generations, then I would be interested, but those are free.

Made an instrument with an old friend of mine, definitely held a lot of value to me.

I did not realize violin strings are so expensive! Do they last awhile at least and are they re usable like guitar strings where you can swap em out intact?

Recently I read about boiling/ cleaning strings which can apparently make them sound like new but each time it lasts shorter. Never tried it though.

I learned the hard way cheap bows suck when I bought one off ebay to try on guitar which didn't work whatsoever... I need a nice cello bow for bass too :awesomenod:

Have you ever tried an electric violin? Definitely won't sound the same as a 2K acoustic but you could get a decent one much cheaper. It's crazy how expensive acoustic instruments get

I would carry on someone else's heirloom in the right situation, like there wasn't a better "heir" for it  It is much different when its a family/ bloodline thing though.

What kind of instrument did you and your friend make? I wish I had friends into that but I have had no luck getting any interested  Their loss

Cello and standup bass strings are even more expensive
Can't speak from experience on how long they last, it seems like the consensus is changing them seasonally.

Cleaning and regularly oiling strings probably helps, the quality difference seems subjective to me, which is also how I look at instruments in general and why I wouldn't pay a shit ton of money for one.

Definitely not interested in electronic instruments  wouldn't play one if it were free

The whole heirloom thing definitely has an appeal, if I were carrying on for one of my teachers it would be about the same as a family hand-down.

We made a drum, nothing fancy really. Would definitely like to make something else, it would be great to make all my own instruments, to be realistic though that's not going to happen. Have to prioritize :mad2:

Makes sense as bass strings cost like 2-3x+ guitar strings :tongue2:

Even with many popular name brands I have heard about dud sets of strings or individual strings being crappy  The music industry is a fickle mistress :stoned:

Why wouldn't you ever play an electric instrument? I love playing acoustic and electric guitar almost equally, they both have their pro's and con's

Carrying on for a teacher would be really cool. You already are carrying on their techniques in a sense so that would just be the next level :sun:

Making a drum still sounds like it would be fun though  I actually want to try and make some percussion instruments. I have an idea for a versatile acoustic/ electric hand drum that I think could be really cool.

I don't like the sound of electric instruments, although some of the more expensive piano imitations sound alright, they're nothing next to a cheap piano. Don't see a point in pursuing that angle when I could just have the real thing.
Of course there are instruments like a telecaster which are not meant to sound like an acoustic, but I don't like the sound of those either.

The drum was a good simple project, something you can do in an hour with a few basic tools, depending on the design.

Melodic instruments are a whole other level of complexity, unless you want to do like an old bluesman and string some cable between two nails in the wall

So your saying you have never heard a recording and thought parts of it sounded good that are from electric instruments? I guarantee you have.

Check this out:

Demonstration of Piezo Pickup-loaded Electric Guitars

Skip to 2:35 for the piezo sounds, it is pretty convincingly acoustic right? This is my next project, adding a piezo to an electric guitar :awesomenod:

Have you ever heard a Clavinet? It is an electric clavichord and they sound amazing :drooling: They are at least 2-3K though sadly...

Clavinet D6

Was it a standard drumskin wooden drum? A friend of mine's father built drums for awhile, he might still even.

There is a local guitarist who plays on one he made from a shovel

Shovelman: Excavating the Future

I saw him play live at a local fest once, it sounds pretty damn good for being a shovel :tongue2:

Sorry for all the videos, just check out how each sounds real quick at least and you may be surprised/ impressed.

More than any part played electric would sound better acoustic, diminished returns. Can't play the videos at this very moment, it'll sound like shite on my phone speakers

The drum was all wood, skin would probably be harder. We used mahogany with a thin cedar top

I agree in part but that is not entirely true. Acoustic instruments are more prone to feedback so they are not as good in super loud settings.

This is true even with semihollow guitars which are more prone to feedback then solid body ones. They both work best with different things honestly.

Acoustics have the best tone on their own obviously but electrics rely more on the amps and effects they can use which gives them an infinitely wide tonal palate.

Have you seen midi guitars? They can be hooked up to any midi device and can play synthesizer and piano/ organ sounds as well as realistic emulations of tons of random instruments. You can play saxophone or drum lines on an electric guitar using MIDI. Eventually MIDI acoustics will probably be a thing but I bet it will work best on electric for a few reasons.

[flash=,]Fishman Triple Play Wireless MIDI Guitar System Demo[/flash]

Pretty interesting stuff. Using Piezos and or MIDI you can get very authentic acoustic tones on an electric but then also be able to play intense electric stuff.

"Super loud" is a bad thing in my book, hearing damage aside, it sounds abrasive and annoying. Many acoustic instruments push that point too well and need to be held back for much or all of a performance (trumpet, shenai).

I don't view electronic instruments as having a wide tonal pallette, they invariably sound compressed and thin to my ear. Novel changes in timbre are surface deep, take a $50 Casio with 2000 "voices", the variety means nothing because they all sound like shite.

I have heard electronic instruments played well, but it's very rarely done and pales to what the same musicians could do with wood or brass.

Listen to the clavi and tell me that man, you sound really biased... For the 2K of a nice violin or similiar acoustic intrument you could get a mini studio

Tons of people play acoustic instruments terribly too so that is not a good argument  I hate electronic music in general but I love some electric instruments.

There is a reason some vintage synthesizers and organs cost thousands of dollars, they sound great and are highly sought after becouse of that.

Clearly a 50$ keyboard isn't going to sound mind blowing but a 2K one will and can make thousands of times as many sounds as any acoustic instrument.

Like I said I love and appreciate both though, clearly some people prefer one or the other. It sounds like you aren't giving electric stuff a chance though.

Back to the thing in the wall, it's an old doorbell system, or a servant ring system. I've seen these (not exactly but almost) in a couple victorian style houses around here that we replaced drywall in a few years back. Theirs was for servant ring system, there was one in each major hallway. they were wired to buttons in 4 rooms and ran on 110.

That is just the thing though, they don't all just imitate. Many of them improve in many ways as well. Like I said both have their pro's and cons.

I would take a MIDI guitar I can play and record drum parts on as well as guitar parts or whatever over a nice acoustic any day just for versatility and to get the most bang for my buck.

Very nice indeed.

I'm looking to spend around £500 tops.

I like the natural wood bodies.  Maple necks.
