Mystery Panaeolus Find - ID help needed
    #23826740 - 11/12/16 06:02 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Habitat:
Northeast USA, found on horse stable dump of straw/dung

Gills:
"Blacker than black" ...they could be none more black

Stem:
Fairly long & sturdy, covered in fine white dust (pruinose?)

Cap:
rather large for Pans, several 2"+ diameter, most cone/bell shaped

Spore print color:
pure black

Bruising:
stems do bruise, seems to be black but hard to be definitive

So this afternoon I found a bunch of what I believe to be pans on a horse stable dump pile. I apologize for no habitat pics but my phone was dead.  Unfortunately many of them were already dried out but I did manage to get a few that were somewhat fresh.

I did several searches and am not finding a match to these caps, they have a really neat pattern on them, they almost look like acorns...anyone recognize these guys?

Compare with Panaeolus acuminatus

Appreciate the quick response but if Mushroom Expert is to be trusted, doesn't look like a solid match.  The stems are not as thin and the listed avg cap size (1-2cm) is small, several of these are 4-5 cm.

I went ahead and took a high res pic of the entire haul, most of these are fairly dried out but maybe someone will see something that rings a bell.

edit: I noticed several Pan descriptions indicate they grow alone or scattered, many of these were actually growing in groups of 3-5 from the same base.

They certainly are an odd one, compare them with Panaeolus retirugis which is conspecific with Panaeolus papilionaceus although I've never seen paps that look like these
The caps almost look like Lacrymaria but the stems are way off from that.

Thanks for taking another look at these, I think you're correct ...I found a local wiki with fairly close pics (by Alan Rockefeller) so unless anyone else has input, I'm leaning towards Pan Pap as the id.

Yes, this is one of the many forms Panaeolus papilionaceus can appear in.
