White stuff on magic truffles.
    #23826360 - 11/12/16 04:11 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hello guys.
Like 1 month back, we were on trip to Amsterdam... We of course bought some magic truffles and took it home. But since then, they are still in my table at room temperature.

I see on one side, there is some white stuff. Is it mold or is it OK to eat?
(I never been on trip) so I want to know your suggestions.

Here are some photos:

I wonder if its oil or fat added as a perspective that settled to the bottom of the container. Open in and smell it, take some pictures. Its hard to telling with them being in the packaging still.

Looks like bacteria to me.  I think you should have refrigerated them.  I've never seen truffles in person though, so I could be wrong.  Just wouldn't want you to get sick on your first trip due to ingesting something nasty.

I can see from the packaging the expiration date hasn't passed, but you were also meant to keep them below 35F (2 Celsius).  I assume your bedroom isn't that cold...

It's totally fine.

Here's some recent Atl#7 for comparison.

It just happens.

If your worried, like others said smell it.  You should know if there's a nasty smell or not.

Yeah OP, if you decide to go for it, dehydrate them or make tea.

Thank you guys for suggestions. And if I wanted to make a tea, then just boil in water add some sugars or something and drink + eat from bottom or just drink?

Sorry for OP tho :/

Don't boil them, it kills potency.
I would dry/dehydrate, grind them in a coffee grinder or smash them up and steep in freshly boiled water.

I dehydrate them just by putting them on some newspapers or something in some dry place? And how long does it take approx?

Somewhat like mushrooms, I believe. Never smelled the sclerotia of this species, though.

You'll notice if it smells acrid/sour/rotten/moldy. Don't throw them until you've smelled them.

Short of it: they look fine to me.

See, sclerotia are formed when the organism is in a bit of a pickle. It's in growing conditions that aren't ideal and starts storing supplies in hard, underground bits of mycelial mass. When the organism gets the chance to grow again, it'll start developing more mycelium etc. Which I think is what you're witnessing here. The white fluff, I think, is mycelium.

Oh, and sclerotia smell a little weird. They smell and taste a bit sour. Like licking a battery. I can't stand the taste, but hey, it's worth it.

To me they always tasted like aluminium. Very metallic tasting.
