Is this normal?
    #23826245 - 11/12/16 03:35 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I'm fairly new to this and this time my cakes have a lot of mushrooms but the base of these is covered in a lot of what I think is mycelium and the little ones are black. Are they just aborts or is there some kind of contamination?

They are aborting for some reason.
Tell a bit more about your setup.

big closed plastic container with perlite on the bottom. I have them resting on foil squares and I spray water in there whenever I feel the humidity's low

Looks too dry to me. I'd harvest, dunk and fruit.

Closed plastic container?  Do you have any holes for FAE?  Too little FAE could cause aborts.  You have more aborts than mushrooms:frown:

I'm basing my dryness off of how the veil broke on the one. It "popped" instead of stretched like the lower one since It was most likely closer to the moist perlite given your using the sgfc approach.

no I don't :frown: like I said I'm pretty new and I guess I thought if there wasn't closed the humidity would be too low... I will drill some right now. As far as dryness I spray them a few times a day so I thought it was alright. Any tips?

You can always compensate for a low humidity by misting.

It does look dry.  But how could it get dried out if his cakes have supposedly been in a closed container.  Something doesn't add up, OP.

OP....
Please Please Please use the search at the upper right of your screen and look up "shotgun fruiting chamber"
Also read the "Getting Started" forums.
You have a whole bunch to learn.
Congrats on a harvest, now do some research and double it next time

Needs to be misted more frequently. It's funny that a sgdc has more fae and requires less misting due to the Fae causing the verm layer to stay uncolonized, and hold more water (this is if you mist properly too).

Let's see some pictures of the entire fruiting chamber.

If it's a fruiting chamber issue we can solve it for you and get you on your way to being more successful.

Your cakes look dry to me as well- but you have fruits - so you are on the right track.

Upload some pics of your SGFC to the shroomery and update your post here.

This is what it looks like, I only added holes in the top a few hours ago

and I've managed to get a decent amount from the cakes this is what I got from two of them. Left side is the fruit and aborts of the first and right of the second

this is what it looked like before harvest

And the third one I harvested is the one in my signature it was just the big one and one under it but I dunked it for 24 hours and now more are coming out
