Puffballs grow to giant size after weekend of rain
27 February 2004
By PATRICIA SOPER

Late summer-early autumn is traditionally the time for fungi to make their appearance.

This year has produced extraordinary quantities of mushrooms and other fungi, due in part to the warm ground conditions and the ample rainfall of the past 10 days.

Northern Southland residents have been enjoying unprecedented quantities of mushrooms, all of good size, quality and flavour.

Puffballs are also to be found at this time but the size of this year's specimens is surprising the most blase of fungi observers.

Annabelle Wilson was amazed by the puffballs she found growing in old, rotted hay on a neighbouring property.

Equalling the size of netballs, they have steadily grown in size for several days.

"Puffballs are a fact of life at this time. We mostly ignore them because we don't eat them in this country but these specimens are the biggest I've ever seen," Mrs Wilson said.

She noticed the cluster of fungi a few days ago but it was only after weekend rain that they grew to this size.

"They have just kept growing.

Some are now past their best but I think the moisture and the fact that we haven't had much direct sun has given them perfect growing conditions."

The red spotted variety was discovered close by. "I know they are toxic but they look wonderful. The sort of thing you see in fairy stories," she said.

think of accidently falling on it once it dries....you'd be the puffball fairy, spreading spores wherever you walked for days on end...
