G2G Transfer. Have to use a tool.

Hey folks, I have a 3 week old GT MS in rye. The jar is fully colonized, looks really clean, and wont break up. I didn't use gypsum and have used it for everything since, but...I would really like to try to use this for a G2G. Working in front of a hepa.

Hit it against a car tire or sole of a boot to break it up. Not very hard or else you'll break the jar. A sterilized spoon could work as well. What kind of "hepa" do you have? Chances are your better off in a SAB.

Hey folks...thank you for the responses. I don't think it's bacterial only because the jar looks healthy, and colonized in what seems like a normal time frame, but I really don't know. I didn't plate any of the MS that it came from. I have tried the breaking it up on a phone book etc. It's not going to happen. As for the hepa, it's a fungi perfecti 24x24 that I built a box for and it works fairly well(I think?) based on low contam rates on plates so far. So just sterilize a spoon?

Man. I've shaken jars like a maniac before. To the point of having a blood red face and sweating... I busted a jar once. That was scary. Luckily I was shaking like a maniac over an empty trash can. I used a spoon once for G2G and it turned out terrible.

Well. You were right. Not trying hard enough...Got it to break up! Thank you. I was just being too cautious.

I wouldn't g2g that. Grains should break up with a couple smacks on the palm, and then shaken up and down to break it up quick and easy.

To be honest with you, I always forget to shake jars.
When I g2g I just slide the grain out crack it in half, then use half for one bag and half for the other. Seal it then break it up once it's in the bag with the other grain.
Never had to many problems with it.
I've done countless tubs without gypsum.

g2g with grain you start out with agar, and make absolutely sure it's clean. It's always best to expand with clean cultures so you don't fail on an epic scale.
I'd just spawn the jar/s and start another a new grain master the right way.
