Gr0wers incubation chamber thread
    #23824313 - 11/11/16 10:26 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

With the new layout, im no longer toting carts to and from incubating inside my house, although i would love to.. my love wont let me... So i purchased 8 boards of MDF, 8 boards of 1" foam board and 12 2x4's. Plan is build a chamber next to my grow chamber for my 4x2 carts with doors on each end and heat and cool it as needed. I think ill even throw a small desktop HEPA in to reduce any contamination from bad seals/filters. Lets see how this goes!!

Using a low RPM 100ish CFM bathroom blower blowing onto a 150w heat lamp using a STC-1000 to control it. The blower and lamp are going to get a box mounted on top later this week so it wont block the bags moving through. Plan is the carts get loaded on the far end outside the garage and unloaded after a 3 week que near the grow chamber door.

Looks awesome.
I just scored about 40 of those foam insulation boards today used but almost  new, my buddy just got a new shop and wanted take it down. I jumped on that, I plan on doing something similar for the reishi bags.

Cool man! I would bump the RH in there up as well as the temp to decrease evaporation and increase growth speed.

I was literally just thinking about building an incubation chamber. how does the heat lamp work? is it infrared? and with the blower is the whole chamber the same temp?

So aside from the obvious bump in speed do you see any other benefits from incubating? I typically don't bother with it, usually I'm dissuading novices from trying it with cubes simply because they usually encounter more problems than it solves. But I'm open to hear an edible growers take on it when done right.

Yes the lamp is just a ceramic heatlamp so no light is made, just heat. With the blower its a good flow and i checked with my heat gun 72f bag temp across the entire chamber on all the shelves.

Pasty,

I haven't tried incubating,  but I imagine the temperature change from incubating conditions to fruiting conditions could contribute to better pin sets.

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking, specifically for cold fruiting species. Would love to hear some other thoughts on it. Winter is proving very mild this year and I want to do some shiitake again but I'm worried my basement might not get as cool as it typically does. Perhaps a real temp swing from warmer than  usual to the cool but not cold might be enough.

At any rate it's kinda off topic so I don't want to derail.

It leads too dialing in your optimal incubation time and temp for maximum yield. Incubating 5 days too short or 10 degrees too low a temp will make the first flush as much as 2 weeks late for example (what i just dealt with). And incubating too long will make invitro pins which waste tons of energy making clumps inside the bags you never harvest.

Interesting. With cubes lately I don't even bother to incubate or colonize in elevated CO2, just spawn em in fruiting conditions and let em go. It actually cuts down pin time. But I figured the tropisim would be quite different for other species which require deliberate shifts to initiate.

Do you find incubating more beneficial with cold weather species vs tropical? Or vice versa.

Yea the cold is really where you need the incubation. Bags just don't consolidate well below 60-65F.  Heat isnt too much of an issue as long as your not cooking the cores.

Gr0wer how did you used to incubate your straw logs? Did you just not cut holes in them?

Do they not colonise well without the holes? I thought high co2 was good for colonising? Sorry thats my last question - dont want to jack the thread. Just trying to figure out if I need to build one of these.

cutting holes in straw logs is for gas exchange. just like a filter disk or polyfill in your jars.

Hey Gr0wer, I'm considering building a similar chamber myself and just wanted to check in to see how yours is working out. I've got a ceramic heat bulb but am a little worried about hot spots

That's what you're going to want the blower for. As long as the air is circulating around the majority of the chamber it should keep the temperature more consistent throughout.

^^^This is my understanding of it, wait for Gr0wer or one of the other more informed members to chime in before making any moves!

It works great. For now I leave my top row empty and the blower on 24/7. When i expand next month and start using the top shelf for incubation i plan to make some sort of air distribution ducting/channels either along the outside or along the top. I also need to start working on getting the ac mounted as it will warm up before i know it.

awesome. I'll definitely be building a smaller scale chamber in the next little while. I'll share my build here
