Why is my alcohol lamp engulfed in flames?
    #23824113 - 11/11/16 08:52 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I have one of the alcohol lamps from FP. Haven't used it in a couple of years.
Lately when I use it, it starts off normal, but after a few minutes, the metal "neck" right below the wick starts to catch fire..like the fumes are coming out of the slots on the adjustable collar...

WTF is going on and how do I fix it? My hacked together alcohol lamp made from a  half pint jar with the wick just jammed thru the lid doesn't seem to have this problem. The wick on the FP burner just barely stick up above the metal collar.
Let me see if I can set my kitchen on fire and get some pictures for you...

Can't add photos to OP.

Wick height seems OK

Initially starts to burn OK

Then gets out of hand.

Don't know why the site rotates the pics- they're oriented correctly in the uploaded images. Is it rotating due to the exif?

I don't have an answer for you but I will recommend a standing gas torch like this. Gets you red hot almost instantly and kicks the shit out of an alcohol lamp in every way. One small can of propane has lasted me years of intermittent use.

I have one of those too. I just prefer using the alcohol lamp. The lamp seems harder to knock over too.

Torches sterilize better. But it looks like you just need to pull up the wick a bit.

Maybe try taking that top piece off and just leaving the whole wick exposed?

That's how my alcohol lamp was & it worked fine. I like a butane torch better though

Why not just keep it simple and get a small torch lighter for under ten dollars?

My alcohol lamp is made from a baby food jar and cotton balls. It works great and it cost almost nothing.

That's what I had before I got the alcohol lamp. It's a PIA compared to the lamp. For one thing, it takes 2 hands to use the lighter.

I had a similar problem:

Alcohol lamp fire

I just bought a soldering torch from home depot.  I turn it down pretty low and it still gets my scalped red-hot in a couple seconds.  I love it.
Initially I was worried about stability because the propane cylinder is long and narrow, but it has proven to be pretty safe and its really helping me with my work.

This is the torch, actually.

I was wondering about that but the home depot dude told me the ignitor torch I bought wasn't compatible.  I don't see why it wouldn't be though.  When I run out of fuel (in like 6 months) I'm definitely gonna do that.  Thanks!

Maybe your alcohol lamp is just ready to be done.  Safety first.  Get another one from a different company.  Have you tried a wickless one?  I ordered one from a vendor to try it out, and they sent me a regular one instead.  Mother fuckers.

Damn if that wasn't it!
Totally counter-intuitive... but that seems to be what fixed it. I tried it both ways several times- and the longer wick burns better.
Can't thank you enough.
