Brf cakes result!

Here's the result of my first attempt. These are brf cakes, and the fc is an aquarium. Not ideal I know, after breaking several containers in an attempt to make a sgfc,I had to improvise. Ive made several mistakes during this first grow, an example is not using a mist shield/spraying too close. Anyway, Im here to learn right?

Very nice, good work mate!
And how did you manage to break cpl of SGFC? while drilling? Next time use a wooden board or something to support the chamber when doing it.

Yep, went through two of them and got annoyed, but damn that board idea should definitely work! I didnt think of that.
Btw, when should I start to remove these of the cakes?

When the veil breaks, as in the middle cake. For the bottom cake u should wait a bit more before harvesting it.
If you want to take prints, wait for the caps to flatten a little (although I heard of people doing prints right when the veil breaks so they don't lose much spores dropping, idk)

Nice yield.
Not to be a negative Nancy but I don't think your cakes will make it to another flush...very nice mushrooms though. Better than I ever got off cakes.

Good work!!! Congrats on a sucsesful first go. When drilling you need to take it easy, don't force the bit, let the tool do the work. Best wishes Dick

I agree, I dont have much hopes for a second flush, but I'm still going to soak and try again. Do you guys ever find truffles inside of them? Also, here is the final flush of that third cake. It ended up pulling through:

why would you find truffles? unless you're growing a species that grows sclerotia

If you work with Cubensis you won't find truffles (sclerotia) in the cakes. Maybe some thickened mycelium or 'blobs' on top of the cakes that look like truffles. If you want to get truffles (it is called sclerotia) you should read about sclerotia producing species like Psilocybe galindoi, Psi mexicana or Psi. Tampanensis.

Oh gotcha. Sorry, I'm still new to fungi. Despite being in a STEM field, I previously had no clue how fungi worked, they were just those weird "bacteria plant things" (I know that's not what they are) that I knew nothing about. I am greatful for this project because it has given me some small exposure to mycology. So are truffles worth it? If I were to grow a species that form sclerotia, then cakes would probably be a shitty environment right?

you wouldn't grow sclerotia on cakes no, that's a shit substrate for them. you grow them on grain spawn, usually rye berries or rye grass seed.
give it a look up you'll find out more than we can repeat

I like to grow sclerotia. It takes some time until you can harvest but you do not need a fruiting chamber. All happens inside the jar. Of course you can get fruits with sclerotia species but the main goal for the most people is the production of sclerotia. Take a look at this: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13431948

Yes, those are spores. I took some prints, however I mostly took from the middle cake since it had the fastest fruiting time and also had the highest yield. I was just reading a sclerotia tek on this site, didn't remember the name of the author, but the font was purple. I'll give this a read. I'm probably going to stick with cubes for a while until I get better. I'd like to try the leucistic A++ as well. After I git good kid, and get better equipment then I may try a species such as mexicana and perhaps try harvesting truffles. Until then I'll be checking out the tek linked as well as read up on ways to move up from cakes. Thank you all for your help in all of this! -Wolf

I think this is the TEK you mentioned.
Growing sclerotia is very easy. Good luck.
