Did you take a spore print? Take one on tin foil, one on white paper, set the white balance on your camera and then post the pics.

Did they grow from wood?

Super helpful! Thank you! I have been wondering how to do the spore printing. I will post photos after. How long do I need to let the cap sit on foil/paper for a good print?

Growing in a grass patch in the woods. Commonly horses are in the area.

To guarantee a decent print? I'd leave them for a good few hours. I think 6 should be enough, though others may disagree. I've read people that say put a glass over the caps, but I'm not sure it's entirely necessary. The basics is this - remove the stem to the point that it's above the gills, then put face down.

It kinda looks like the spores are brown on the annulus/ring around the stipe/stem imo.

Like elprawn was saying the color balance on your camera is pretty important and the back ground.

I like doing spore prints actually on glass, so I can change the colors of the background as well as hold it up to the light and what not. I work with glass alot and have excess glass everywhere though.

You can take two small pieces cut to the size of the caps and save prints for a long time by taping the two pieces together as well, to compare with other finds that may look similar.

Glass cutters are pretty cheap and easy to use.

I put a glass over smaller mushroom caps when printing because it helps them stay moist & moisture is the key to the mechanism used by mushrooms to eject spores, larger caps stay moist without a cover, usually. I usually print for 12-24 hours.
