ID Req: Cinct Variations With Shade and Moisture?
    #23822729 - 11/11/16 11:33 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Found these in a sodded area with a lot  of shade and moisture. Trees directly above and lots of clover keeping moisture down, mixed in stinging nettle. Other confirmed cincts within feet.

They have all the characteristics of pan cincts with the exception of the less leathery cap that is khaki/brown. Is this just variation with extreme shade and moisture vs. a lawn variety in direct sun??
You can see a little zonating coming in on the biggest.

Thanks in advance.

I have found caps on lawn pans to vary quite a bit, all the way from solid dark brown to nearly cream but the color of those gills looks a bit unusual.  imo a spore print would be most useful in this case.

Deal with foes a lot.
Stipes too chunky. Printing now.
Stipe striations check. Gill mottling check.

So we have a black print. Upon printing, the caps went light tan....no more khaki/brown.

Any confirmations?

I think those are Psathyrella gracilis
edit: if the print is black*

I'm in S. Cal. Does that eliminate either fimicola or olivaceus?
Thanks Joust.

nah, just print them and see the spore color to make sure you at least have a pan!

I vote Panaeolus foenisecii.

I hate when people "vote" foe when the mushrooms are clearly active panaeolus type of sp.
it's like they want someone to be disappointed when there is a clear opportunity to bare good news

OP those are some beautiful pans they definitely look active to me and they strike me as a cinctulus

So on second look at the prints there was some grey or light black. They were not "jet" black like other cinct prints I have taken. Leading me more towards fimicola based on descriptions on this site.

Care to take a picture of the prints? Did they sit long? I'm thinking it might be a Psathyrella sp., looking at the cap surface
close up shots on the right. Not entirely sure though. Perhaps Byrain might drop in with a comment.

Clearly an active mottle gill
Nice find
And to answer your original question, yes I find tons of variation (cap color/shade, ect) with pan cincts but as you would guess it's just a reaction to the environment the mushroom resides in. A cinct in a wet shady area is probably gonna look alot different than one sitting in a more open dryer area. But that's just nature, two birds of the same species have the ability to have various differences in their appearance. Same with mushrooms
