Does my substrate tell you anything?
    #23822328 - 11/11/16 08:58 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

So recently I started a few tubs from some g2g jars where the master jars looked a little bit bacterial. I took pictures of the two tubs I have on top because they are the closest to fruiting (hopefully). The substrates look a little dry to me, but do they tell you guys anything else? Is that thick looking mycelium normal to have? The other tubs are very close to being totally colonized but I don't have that thick mycelium up top. I've been misting the walls and lid of the tubs regularly, but I've started to back off on that. I once lightly misted the substrate itself by spraying over the tub by a foot or so and letting the water particles fall on the substrate, but afterwards I noticed that bruised the sub a little bit. Thoughts?

Never mist the walls and lid. Plastic doesn't grow....

A tub built correctly and prepared correctly requires no misting at all before the first flush. You're just helping it fail by over saturating it

They don't look very healthy but hopefully get something from them

Ah, I just noticed a lack of condensation on the tub walls and wanted to keep the humidity up, perhaps I should have adjusted the polyfil instead. The other tubs look healthier, probably because I haven't been messing with them.

This is what Tub #1 looked like earlier:

They don't look the best but they don't look horrible, either. All the pics look kinda dry to me. The pics might be deceiving me, but I'd mist these if they really are that dry.

I lightly misted it before, and it it bruised a little bit. Should I still do that?

They're definitely contaminated. The jars had bacteria in them, but I wanted to give it a go anyway.

Yes, they look like they have bacteria, but I see knots. You should have pins soon!

Lay off the misting. Just leave them be til they flush.

I wouldn't mist at all. There's enough moisture for pins. Especially being bacterial I wouldn't attempt to optimize moisture supply.

Here are the other two tubs going right now. They look a little better IMO.

Well here's an update. The first two tubs are on their second flush. The last two are well on their way.

Tubs 1 & 2 before harvest:

Honestly tub 2 seemed very photogenic at the time so here's just a couple closeups I took at the time...

Tubs 3 & 4 right now:

Pinset on the 4th and largest tub isn't looking too bad

Second flush from 1&2:

I'll close the thread when I have pics of the final flush from tub 4 I think. This contamination is definitely spurring my move to agar. I'll start with that when I have more time in the coming month. Glad I spawned to bulk, it worked out this time.
