Drying and Storing
    #23821965 - 11/11/16 05:22 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

So I've read a bunch of threads on here on how to keep mushrooms good when you don't plan to use them right away. I got a dehydrator and my first flush I dried cracker dry like someone suggested. Me and a buddy tried them last week and they didn't work. I don't know if that's because I dried them too much or if it was because most of them were not able to grow very big unfortunately.

This time I didn't dry them as much and I put them in a container and put in fridge like someone else suggested. I checked on them last night and they were limpy and all blue.

Two questions. One.. Could they lose potency by drying too much.. and two are the ones in the fridge going to be okay to use or do you feel those too will have lost potency from becoming limpy and blue.

Thanks for your feedback in advance.

They can definitely lose potency, depending on what dehydrator you use. Some cheaper models get very hot, and will literally cook your mushrooms. Sure, they dry fast, but you lose potency quite a bit. More expensive models are the way to go, in that regard. Some don't even use heat, just a fan. I recommend using desiccant. It takes longer, but there is no risk of losing potency. I have always preferred this method. Try it out! You can buy desiccant at many stores. Just set up a dessication chamber, and you are golden. Good luck to you.

As far as the ones in the fridge, I would not recommend keeping them in there longer than a few days. If you ever want to do that, put them in a paper bag, or something similar, but that is usually when you want to consume them fresh, and very soon.

It could be bad genetics with low potency.. happens sometime.

:justno:

Drying with heat does not affect potency. You need VERY high temperatures to destroy the actives. I think no dehydrator gets hotter than 200F (and even 200F would be OK).

The search function provides a lot of information about drying and storing. There has been a lot of discussion about this topic.

Thermal degradation takes very high temperature. Like I said over 300/350

Enzymatic degradation because fruits are still wet takes place at room temp to warm temps. Over 150-160f most enzymes are cometely deactivated.

Us guys who have been around do as hot as the dehydrator goes. To shut off enzymes. And get them cracker dry as fast as possible to lock in potency.

Usually 12+ hrs or more for thick fucks

No drying isnt what ruined them, probably just bad genetics or exposure to still air for a long time, the ones in the fridge will probably be even worse because theyre oxidized to hell.
Drying in a food dehydrator is the best option, heat wont degrade psilocybin up until 300f ~ 150c.

Interesting! Thanks for the correction there. I have always noticed a difference in the mushrooms when they are dried in a dehydrator, and when they are dried using desiccant. I always blamed the heat on this. When using desiccant, I never have to take more than two grams of Cubensis. When I used a dehydrator, I took nearly two eighths, and got less of an effect. Coincidence?

I used a dehydrator only once, after realizing that I prefer desiccant. My buddy used a dehyadrator for his, as well. I based much of what I said on his mushrooms. Same Cubensis, and again, much less potent than the ones I had grown and dried with desiccant.

With that being said, just try your hand at a side-by-side comparison of the two drying techniques, and I bet you will notice a difference. Good luck!

I've dried with a dehydrator for the last few years and my fruits have been MUCH more potent than before.. I guarantee your issue was genetics, and you have had a false correlation thinking it's the dehydrator.

Yeah, that is what I was trying to imply in my last post. Appreciate the information, guys. Haha!
