Best technique with vendor spawn bag?

Just ordered some blue oyster spawn and was wondering what the best sterile technique would be to get it going.
It comes on small grains (possibly popcorn) in a small plastic bag folded over with a staple through.
Do i cut the bag with a heated scalpel? Which then would mean i would need to use all the spawn
Do i wipe the staple with iso then pull it out?
Is it best to go straight to grain from the spawn? or do you always pull it to agar first?
And finally if im putting it to agar is it safer to pour the grain out or do i use a scalpel to grab some?
Sorry if this seems noobish but i lost a fight with bacteria on my last spawn bag

I recently bought a whole bunch of cheap WBS spawn, plastic wallet with staples. Comes lightly contaminated with bacteria. I use T-Gel and wood pegs.
Do you have any agar or can you source strong gelatin?

Yes i can make agar which is how i was trying to clean up my last culture but every transfer it kept coming back with bacterial contam. Surely the spawn should be clean before its opened? it didnt look slimy or bacterial in the bag.

Standard agar has 0 bacterial control ability. It even uses bacteria loving starch. To prove the point you have to pressure cook it. Read this to the end.
Get the smallest sample, you can get a 50g trial pack.

A stapled bag also has zero bacterial control ability. Spawn should be supplied in a sealed sterile bag else any temperature change will contaminate it.

Thats true solarity, price is quality. Mine is for testing and cleaning various mycelium on T-Gel.

Order from somewhere else next time, or possibly just get a culture in trade from someone else in the UK. As far as taking some grains to a dish I usually do it with leftover spawn after pouring it, seal the bag back up until you are ready to put it on dishes and I usually just use my scalpel to stab or stick to a grain and put it on the plate. To open the bag you cut open a corner with scissors to create a sort of spout for pouring, clean the bag and scissors well before opening.

Thanks for this. Ive used two different vendors who both packaged in the same way; if this culture isnt clean i might just offer a trade on here. As for using tea it may well help keep the bacteria at bay a little but i need my technique down first so i can keep the contams right down whatever im doing.

if its stapled yea you might be in for some fun. Your best bet is clean the shit out of the bag with lysol then 70% Iso. take a red hot flamed scalpel and cut the bag in half. Split the block in half and take a sample from the core. Then call amycel and order one 20 lb bag of 3015 for $40 including shipping and prepare to lime or hot water bath pasteurize a bale of straw and step up your game
On another note, fuckin 20 lb spawn bags from amycel are a PITA to handle! I need 2 hands to hold the bag!

Funny, the last time I had to salvage spawn that I ordered was from a 20# bag of amycel, I ordered in the summer and missed it's first delivery so it sat in 100+ degrees for days. No fun.

Do you think its safe to use the sample from the core straight to grain?

No! I don't have blue oyster at the moment but I have a few other types. If you are in no rush I can make a clean set of pegs for you.
PM me if you are interested.
