Yeah things are definitely dying down here right now. I found quite a big flush in a field with long grass the other day, but there was only about 10% of previous yields in the short grass in my other spots. Quite frustrating as I spent all this time waiting for rain and then it came with frosts attached!

i've been finding loads of albinos this year as well. wasn't sure if they were liberty caps though so didn't pick em. are they still psychoactive if they are sterile?

yes...just means no spores, also post one up , just to double check if your not sure

the sudden coldness had stunted flushes , anyone knows if its picked up again, temps to rise at the end of the week , with a bit of luck it picks up again for a few more flushes in the next few week...

if not, was an abrupt end to a fruitful season, shared out 7 oz for nice price's in needed corners of the town lol and have a jar to last through out year myself, chuffed overall :-) time goes so dam quickly though

There was frozen ground when I was walking on tuesday. Only found a few libs. Then it snowed. Tonight the bin lid was sparkly out the back.
Not sure if a last mission to mushy field is worth it?

They look like liberty caps to me but I couldn't be totally sure from the photo. The one at the bottom looks a bit past it's use by date and probably is being eaten by fungus gnat larve. I tend to throw them back if they are a bit rotten. I still haven't found any this year and it's probably too late now, although there's a chance there may be ps cyanescens about in a month or so.

yes.... - but they beautiful big or small boob  :vaped:

mono -I'm un sure about middle, as soaked, photo unclear... 2 either side it are of a panaeolus type, a dung bearing mushroom..... libs don't grow directly out of the dung btw

going out in morning for the final round, 6 targets , no point visiting one, get all whats left in all locations, then that's me done, il be able to judge whether be worth returning once all spots have been semi cleared... wondering how Reptons patches r doing since that mini freezing spurt. temperatures to get up to 10, 14 degree in places tommora like Plymouth, wind and rain along west SW,NW , so say bye to the frost and hard ground spider, although the spurts may of been enough to end it , it may not have. so id say worth checking within next week defiantly just to be sure... gunna be windy, mild air

Harking from the south a poor season in this region. First unseasonally sunny and warm weather that just would not stop, weeks on end. Lovely weather but the most delayed season I can recall. Ground caked hard.

And then almost directly over to frosts with just a very light single spell of rain in between for less than 1 hour, light frosts but many of them 4 or 5 so far in the last 14 days or so.

My first journey 2 weeks ago out I found 50 dried out stunted liberty caps all of 1/3 of their full size. It was so dry they never even got to maturity.

Second journey out 25 or so, more moist but so few for so long a walk.

So many factors it is hard to pin down really. My area of the south has high population and the lowest good habitat. Competition is always high and that is just part of the phenomena, it's cool.

So I wonder is that it ? Or are they holding out for another flush in 1-2-3 weeks time if the frosts hold off. Who knows ? If I have any free time I might have a wander.

I think it may well be over now, it felt like it never truly started.
My very first year I found 800 or so, this year 75

south east as well. been a slow start but it seems to be picking up within the last week. first time looking for them so i haven't got experience to compare it to, however researching on the optimum conditions seems to indicate that the weather has been far milder and dryer than the mushrooms enjoy.

the increase I have seen seems to bear this out as we have been experiencing wetter and colder weather.

a general question. is it a better idea to leave the smaller liberty caps? are they sexually immature at a certain size and I am preventing the spreading of the spores by picking them?

they are the best 1's tbh young with a sturdy posture n no ur fine to pick em all billions of spores n myc there already

at libert all libs some sterile see the stipe dead giveaway n gill structure

I would have thought that it is common sense to leave very immature mushrooms. Especially those that are moist and translucent and whose cap has yet to open. This allows them to release more spores invigorating the grasses in which they grow. By removing them before they release any spores you are reducing spore count that is dropped.

If you want your field to be healthy, pick sustainably.

People who pick immature mushrooms actually get right up my nose. I find it inconsiderate for the environment and other pickers.

Having had a poor few picks this year it is easy to see that picking undeveloped mushrooms - not dried shrivelled ones that are essentially dead - why that might be happening.

If you pick pins you are screwing the field, yourself and everyone else especially in areas that liberty caps are not growing in carrier bags worth areas.

I appreciate the greatest variable annually is weather conditions but we should do what is within our power to be sustainable.

actually the mature mushrooms that release the spores.... so its always good to leave mature ones also 2bh ... I don't pick the pins simply because its not really worth risk of being greedy...

leave some behind for the symbiont insects and I leave medium mature for the spores

I would say for east Anglia , it only really started kicking off 10th October , by the 20th it reached a peak - now this peak is down sloping which is natural this end of the year, but the frosts did stunt growth if not halt them a finish for this year in some remote places, but temperatures are meant to be going up to their normal amount for this time of year , say 8-10 in the day,5-8 at night lowest , this wont matter though for areas that had a weeks worth of consecutive frosts.. going out for a scout , will report back when back

Hey guys, looking for some opinions on whether our trip was successful. I've never picked after so much rain so I'm not used to getting them whilst they're fresh and slimy. I'd really appreciate some opinions. Thanks guys! Happy picking
