settle this debate on making tubs?
    #23820227 - 11/10/16 03:57 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Since I started making monotubs I've always did a layer of substrate, layer of grain, layer sub, layer grain, etc and put a top layer of sub on last.  Someone once wrote layering makes the fruit bodies grow in a more even pinset and encourages vertical growth instead of side pinning.  Is this BS?

A couple of TC's have commented that they mix their sub and spawn evenly and don't even use a top layer leaving exposed grains.

"The top layer of substrate is not needed, and you will see faster colonization times without it.
I have never had the problem of the top grains left exposed "drying out" and contamning."

but RR stated

"Never leave exposed grains on top.  They dry out and then the mushroom mycelium dies back, giving trich has a nice home."

Can anyone settle this? I'm sure if you cased it things would be fine but i'm lazy haha what if you even did a layer of sprinkled vermiculite to help prevent contam like cakes? or should i just do a thin layer of substrate?

all i do is mix the shit up and at 100 % i fruit it you aint going to get trich from exposed grains  dirty spawn causes trich

Like virtually everything in this hobby, there is no "settling it." Different people have different opinions, and that's fine. There are innumerable paths to successful grows. All of the techniques you mentioned are fine. The only way to settle it for yourself is to try different things and find out what you prefer.

Personally, I mix my bulk substrate and grain spawn together, and then add a thin layer of just substrate to the very top. I have also layered and that's fine too.

I layered just because someone said it was more efficient but hated it because its time consuming.  if it doesn't make a difference, i'll just mix and put a thin layer on top it would save a ton of time.

I mean, it's not that there's necessarily no difference, just that people have success both ways. And you aren't going to find a strong consensus either way - some people will say one way is definitely better and others will say the opposite. Asking to settle this is like asking to settle a hot button political issue; you will get different opinions depending who you ask :hehehe:

Try changing your method as you said you would, and see if you notice a difference in the result. Then switch back to layering if you feel like mixing isn't as good. Doing a side-by-side experiment with as many variables controlled (same batch of grain, same batch of substrate, same tub design, etc) as possible is good too.
