Some fine tuning needed regarding oyster technique
    #23818142 - 11/10/16 01:11 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Okay big thanks to Grower and Mycolorado for their precious advice on my last thread.
Now i would like to know about few things
A) Is the straw better chopped or shredded. How will it effect mycelium growth/bag preparation/fruiting.

B)I have been growing oysters for about 6 months in poly bags, only a pound in weight. But now i want to cultivate oysters on logs, which will carry about 3-5 pound wet straw.
-So please tell me the general technique for the preparation of logs, without expensive equipments. What are the problems i might face in log method.
I heard log method leads to water collection at the bottom of log.
what is the optimum size of poly tubes for a 5 pound log.

There will be no significant difference, if you had success with what you were doing keep doing it , yes to chopped straw

I think something 5"-6" diameter - maybe less - would be the best size for 5#.  Easiest way without expensive equipment, get a steel drum, fill with water, put it under a flame, and hot water pasteurize.  You'll need a basket to contain all of your straw.  A drain is nice but not necessary and you will need two strong people or a pulley/hoist to lift.  Working with straw is a pain though.  Also, moisture buildup isn't an issue with "logs" that small.  If heat treatment isn't an option, you could look into lime pasteurization.

Logs are an invitation to flies and flies will pass any bacteria around. The quicker you can move to sawdust blocks the better. Look at Gr0wers technique for a low cost steamer and get some unicorn bags if you want to continue to grow consistent well formed fruits. Buying commercial spawn is almost a must, at least to get started, they are vigorous and prolific and definitely worth the money.
