90% of the manufacturing jobs lost since 2000 were lost to automation, not China or Mexico. Haven't heard trump say a word about that. I guess it's easier to fool the ignorant masses with talk about Mexican rapists than actually talk about the real issues.

Automation is da bomb. Luddites need not apply! It will of course break our political-economic system entirely if things continue to concentrate to the top - but that's okay.. that too needs to progress somehow

Automation is great. There will come a day when there will be no jobs for humans to do. The question is whether we will blame lazy workers for not having jobs or pat each other on the back and share in the bounty.

We need leaders who have the balls to tell people that their jobs are not coming back. That this isn't a bad thing. It represents human progress and we should all benefit from technological advances. This is not the leader we have in Donald trump.

Nor Clinton unfortunately  Nor anyone in congress for that matter. Save perhaps Sanders. But going down his route which eventually may entail the actual sharing of the mass productivity created by automation in the face of diminishing labor would make a looooot of capitalists squirm.

Just keep acting ignorant. "That day" isn't a day. It's a slow progression and somebody who is blaming the other for what is happening in America is a shit leader. These jobs aren't coming back. We need someone who has the leadership skills to be honest with the American worker and does something to usher in an economy where not everyone can have a full time job - because that is where we are heading.

What jobs will people be able to have when we have the technology to do their jobs for a fraction of the cost? Stop burying your head in the sand. This is the end result of technological advancement and we need to address what it means for the workers. There will be a day where nearly every task can be done by a robot or computer.

 moar like denmark style - but we've been down this path before.

And for that matter Donald Trump is an idiot who idolizes 1880s resource based capitalism which will produce the same boom/bust conditions that impoverished ghost-town states like West Virginia in the first place. Even more drastically as new technologies out stripe coal and put them back in the exact predicament they were in before.
While Sanders was pushing for education systems that would allow these people - as stuck in their ways as they are - to at least have the option to train for something sustainable.  Sure they'll have their hoo-haw's for 5-10 more years... and then they'll be even more fucked afterwards.

No, train them for jobs that won't disappear in ten years.

If you drive for a living, you will be out of a job in ten years. That ship has sailed. Either you can accept that you need to get a new line of work, fight for things like basic minimum income or just whine about how crappy the economy is even though it is quite the opposite.

Trump has told the people in West Virginia that he will get their jobs back. He won't. Coal is dead. Move on.

They were already out of jobs because the natural course of the economy pushed them out.

It's time to find something new to do, not resurrect a failed enterprise to try and accommodate them because they have no dynamism. Anyways it seems he only said that to dupe them and doesn't really give a shit fortunately.

Yup. You got it. Stop lying to them and telling them they have a future by continuing down a dead end street.

Leadership isn't telling people what they want to hear. Leadership is doing things that are difficult.

That's funny because Obama did just that. He surrounded himself with like minded ideologues that told him what he wanted to hear. He just said he was caught off guard by the forming of ISIS. Liberals hands are so far in the and it's pretty funny. I hope the antics continue because if the liberals and democrats stay the course, they will loose even more congressional and senate seats.

He was probably caught off guard by ISIS because it was Hillary at the foreign policy helm :smilingpuppy:

Seeing as trumps appointing fast food CEOs to labor positions at the moment I don't know how good 2-4 years  from now is looking for the republicans either. Unfortunately for both parties their most staunch supporters are dying on the yearly - and the younger ones hate them both.
