I agree that the proposed system would be better if it divided the electoral votes according to the number of popular votes in each state instead of doing it by winner take all. On the other hand, as they get closer to 270, maybe the congress will take it seriously and  make the law better.

If they did that, it would kind of throw the whole "winner of the popular vote wins the election" thing out the window.

If all the states did it it would have the same result as just counting the popular vote.

Yes, (except maybe in some of the tightest races?), but it seems most likely that not all of the states would get on board. The advantage of the proposed scheme is that it achieves that goal (whoever gets the popular vote wins the election) even if not all the states join.

Clinton won by over a million votes

Clinton currently has 61,964,263 votes compared with Trump's 60,961,967

She didn't win though. IMO it would make more sense if the position was awarded to the person who received the most votes from the public, but we all know that's not how it's set up.

What is the argument people keep using that keeps the electoral system in place and stops everyone from removing it? It must be a descent argument otherwise why does it still exist?

We can change the system. The electoral college was so ill conceived, it has already been changed once. Let's just get rid of it.

I thought I wrote that pretty clearly, not sure what you're not understanding.

- Clinton didn't win.
- I think it would make more sense if the person who got the most votes from the public was the person who won, but that's not how it works.

Ok. So Hillary won the most votes from the public.

While Trump won the most electoral votes.

What I still don't understand is why we keep the electoral system in place. It seems whatever reason they had for creating it has long since changed so really, why is it here?

Yeah, it intensifies diversity. It doesn't settle it. The majority vote would be even and fair

Oh god I should just let this thread die already. 15 pages and there is still no resolution to this.

Liberals would love for the Electoral College to be removed, that's a scum liberals dream.

If the Electoral College was removed New York, California and Chicago would control the country.  They have an overwhelming amount of liberals and that make up a huge percent of the population.

I am 100% for the Electoral College.  We don't need a bunch of liberal scum ruining our country even more.

What the fuck?

Is there supposed to be some kind of logic there? It's like you just admitted the entire electoral system exists simply to stop the popular vote from winning so Republicans have the upper hand

Listen to your argument. Liberals make up a majority of the population. You can't win if the country has free and fair elections. You need republican votes to count more than liberal votes. You like it becasue it's affirmative action for republicans.

The US doesn't even have free and fair elections. What an embarrassment.

Quote:

1. Free and Fair Elections

In any State the authority of the government can only derive from the will of the people as expressed in genuine, free and fair elections held at regular intervals on the basis of universal, equal and secret suffrage.
2. Voting and Elections Rights

(1) Every adult citizen has the right to vote in elections, on a non-discriminatory basis.

(2) Every adult citizen has the right to access to an effective, impartial and non-discriminatory procedure for the registration of voters.

(3) No eligible citizen shall be denied the right to vote or disqualified from registration as a voter, otherwise than in accordance with objectively verifiable criteria prescribed by law, and provided that such measures are consistent with the State's obligations under international law.

(4) Every individual who is denied the right to vote or to be registered as a voter shall be entitled to appeal to a jurisdiction competent to review such decisions and to correct errors promptly and effectively.

(5) Every voter has the right to equal and effective access to a polling station in order to exercise his or her right to vote.

(6) Every voter is entitled to exercise his or her right equally with others and to have his or her vote accorded equivalent weight to that of others.

(7) The right to vote in secret is absolute and shall not be restricted in any manner whatsoever.

And people in deep blue and deep red states would have chosen their votes differently. A popular vote vs. electoral college vote changes the strategy for not only the campaigns, but for millions of Americans as well.

Can't rewrite the rules after the contest is over. Typical cheating mindset of the sore loser democrat party and their pathetic minions.
