Candy caps or something else?
    #23816622 - 11/09/16 03:42 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I'm thinking these are candy caps. In the books everything matches up but it doesn't smell as sweet as they books say. The color in the pic is more saturated than "real life", more burnt orange than bright orange.

Habitat:

Growing in forests and wooded areas near Bellingham, WA

Gills:

reddish brown tan

Stem:

Stem up to 4" long, max size 1/2" diameter, hollow with thick walls, easy to break and sort-of clean in the break

Cap:

From 3/4" to 3" in diameter, flatish with a dimple, brown/tan/rust (not as orange as in the pic)

Spore print color:

Not available but I'm gonna figure out how to do this soon.

Bruising:

none

Other information:

It did exude white milky stuff when I cut it across the gills and the milk did not change color.

Smells like... a mushroom, nothing special. I tried frying a few to see if the scent of maple syrup was in the air, it was not. Everything about this shroom appears to be what books say "candy caps" are expect that it doesn't smell sweet. There was an old one in the forest that had broken down to a slimy nub and it did smell a bit sweet like syrup.

I have a couple that have been drying in a paper bag for several days and they are beginning to smell sweetish.

Not sure what species, but the white latex crosses all the species of candy caps off the list. The latex of candy caps is always clear or very slightly white, often being compared to very watered down milk.

Lactarius species, but not candy caps.
