Smell but not see bacteria on agar?
    #23816173 - 11/09/16 12:57 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

So I had some agar plates with some mycelium on them. They had been around for about 2 weeks, maybe a little more. once of my new transfers showed a pink sludge all around one side. Obvious contam so gone. Now out of the original and couple transfers that had NO visual contamination I could smell a sour smell that was not in other. I connect this with bacteria. So I pitched them to be safe. My true question here is was I right? Is it possible to have a bacteria growing with the mycelium that one can not see? Perhaps I need more experience on agar, but even when I opened the jars to scrape down the garbage disposal, and inspected MUCH closer I still could not see anything but mycelium.

You probably made the right choice, it's a lot better to lose a plate or two than several jars.

There's a thread on here showing examples of hidden bacterial contaminations on agar, I think Boddhisatta is mentioned in it, or maybe he's the OP of it.
