Traveling Central America
    #23815789 - 11/09/16 10:17 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I have been blessed with the opportunity of a lifetime- to backpack central america for an indefinite period of time.  February 23rd a very close companion and I will be buying one way tickets to San Jose, Costa Rica.  We will be attending envision music festival on the 26th, then bussing from there to Forest Dance Costa Rica, a 6 day sacred fire dance. http://www.heartbeatcollective.org/forestdance/costa

From there we will be traveling to the various hotspots around the country, thankfully with two other friends who understand the culture and speak fluent spanish. We will be traveling with them for about a month, at which point they will be going south to Panama and us North to Nicaragua.  This will give us the opportunity to reach an acceptable level of spanish and integrate within the society.

In nicaragua we plan on visiting leon, doing a homestay or two, seeing the volcanoes and I definitely want to see ometepe Island at the very least.

Then to Honduras --> Guatemala --> (potentially) Belize --> Mexico.  We may end in guatemala though, depends on how we are feeling.  We could easily be staying 6-12 months in Central America.

My questions to you is:

Have you ever done something like this before?  Do you have any tips?  How much did you spend and how long did you stay?  Do you have any spots you recommend?

Originally it was supposed to just be a one month in Costa Rica type of thing, at least thats what she wanted.  But she phoned me yesterday from the mountains saying she wanted to do a whole tour so now im in the beginning stages of planning this trip.

Costa rica is touristy and overpriced imo, but naturally beautiful.nicaragua is cheap and super chill the cities are more sketch than the pueblos, (as with everywhere else in the world), but if you speak a little spanish you'll be fine. Guatemala is amazing for the indigenous culture and the ruins, mexico is great too, don't beleive the media, the mafias will punish people for robbing tourists in tourist areas worse than the police will, they dont want the tourists to stop coming and buying shit, as the economy revolves around tourism and selling drugs to tourists on vacation...

Yeah i've heard mixed reviews about costa rica, beautiful but pricey.  Right now it's seeming like the best option is to work our way north through Mexico rather than stopping in Belize.  I've heard its beautiful there.

I stayed in Chiapas for a week. It's very different than northern Mexico. It's almost entirely an indigenous population. Saw the ruins in palenque.

Good luck man, I hope you don't get kidnapped.  One good thing though, if you do get kidnapped, they don't like to murder whites, just hold you for ransom, those brown brothers want good relations between the USA and their neck of the woods, so wont kill you based on that alone.

Picking shrooms in such an area would be an amazing experience, not just active species, but any type of shroom.

Kidnapping is really not that common in Costa Rica

To get from Costa Rica to Mexico you need to traverse two of the most dangerous countries in the world. He won't be kidnapped but it's doubtful he'll survive.

I thought it said he bought a one way ticket to Costa Rica?

Oh shit, I didn't see his itinerary after that. Yeah Belize is risky. Mexico is risky.

He will be OK, but there's a list of the worlds 50 most violent cities on a business oriented site, just search 50 most violent cities and it should come up.

Most are in Mexico, Central/South America.

Not to mention all the endemic diseases. Have you ever seen that show "monsters inside me?" Every other story is about some horrific parasite someone picked up traveling from Costa Rica to Mexico. Themovement already looks emaciated. I doubt he could survive a bought of malaria or dengue fever. And he'll definitely pick up zika and end up leaving a trail of tiny headed babies in his wake.
