Thinking of trying my hand at grafting
    #23815341 - 11/09/16 06:52 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I had a quick question about grafting.  I currently have about three hundred little seedling trichocereus cactus that are only about two weeks old and I'm thinking about trying my hand at grafting. What is the difference in growth rates of a grafted seedling compared to line left to grow on its own root system?  Thanks for any info!

I wouldn't graft a trich to a trich.  What I would do is wait for them to get 12" to 18" and cut them where they are thick around.  Then scan and root.  Nothing as risky as growing a 4' cactus with a small bottom.

With what you have and depending on where you live, you're going to have to wait a few years before even considering grafting fyi. Like Morel said, its too risky growing on a short, skinny, unstable base.

He didn't even say what stock he plans on using

If you wanna graft to peres, increase in growth rate is phenomenal.
Sooner the better, and yours will make these guys cacti look like baby gherkins

From same batch of seed planted the same time

About 3 months of growth own roots vs. grafted to pereskiopsis

Heres about a 6 month comparison

I have never seen anyone graft a trich before. Mother grow fast on their own.  It only makes sense to take cuttings and grow as many as possible.  Usually people graft to them.

Lots of ppl graft trichs to pereskiopsis when growing trichs from seed, they may grow fast when they are bigger but the first couple years on own root they are slow and aren't big enough to take cuttings. Grafted to peres you can have one bigger than a 2 year old in 6 months.

When I was growing them, I would see 8 inches of growth on some.  Sadly, they don't do much more than an inch in the winter.
