I'm going to just leave this here...
Quote:
Pastywhyte said: Coir may be a source of cellulose but, that cellulose is also bound up in lignin. Lignin is difficult for many species to break down, and is also why I suspect we need to cook the coir in the first place; it allows the agaricales to break through the lignin to get to the cellulose.
krypto2000 have you ever sterilized coir? Cause I have. Many many many times. I even made a thread on it a few years ago.

Not to mention that several of my grow logs have featured sterilized coir. You might remember this one.

At the end of the day spores of any species will not germinate on coir. That is the key. I have sterilized coir, exposed it to open air, then sealed it back up again and left it for months. The experiment has been done by many others, many times. Just because some people can't face the fact that their spawn was the source of their contams, does not make sterilized coir unsafe.

Interesting. I have not heard too much about that, but I will definitely keep that in mind. I have never really had any issues with my substrate when I sterilize it. My last few grows had consisted of coco coir, though, not manure. I will definitely pasteurize manure when I finish my current grow. Thanks for the input, guys.

Agreed on g2g with the 2 jars. Thanks for that info mad season good stuff.
Yeah g2g those jars mix cvg do big tubs case them. Play with agar and read more about other techniques. Shroomery is the shit!

Anyone ever thought about using a muffin pan with a handful of straight grain/WBS, cased, then fruiting in a monotub.
You could lift out your mushroom muffins.

post some pics of those jars, if you're asking about 2 jars I guess you dont have a bunch extra waiting for you so you wanna see some return from these 2 jars, if they're too bacterial you dont wanna ask them to first colonize a bunch more grains and then a bulk sub.

I'm a little lost on the bactrial thing. I read something saying all grower have bacterial pretty much but at what point is it noticeably gonna be a problem to spawn? Is it when you actually start to see the metabolites on the jar?

tiny amounts of bacteria, yeah, but if you can see your mycs morphology changing in the grain jars because of bacteria you dont wanna expand that. its probably fine for spawning, cubes are like weeds when it comes to mushrooms, they're really sturdy.

It is not easy to make a short answer to this question.
Some jars have little signs of bacteria like a few wet spots or mycelium that does not fully regenerate after shaking. It is possible to spawn jars like these but it could reduce the yield or make you grow vulnerable for other contaminations.
If the jars a very hard contaminated by bacteria and you see slime or the whole jar looks very wet like all grains are pressed to the glass you should toss it.
There are some good threads with pictorial examples. Maybe I find a link for you. Give me a second.
//edit
This is not the thread i was looking for but it should help.

photo upload
Some grains are not colonized yet.I gave them another shake. The small jar is going to be used as g2g. How much grain do i have to use for a 1qt jar?
pic upload This is my attempt on a mini mono. Its 17qt.Does it look okay too you? I have only one hole on each long side because of the small size. What do you think?

The fruiting chamber looks great. If I were you, I would put a few smaller holes towards the sides, but that is me. Others might have different opinions. As far as the grain goes, use your best judgement. A small amount of grain might work, but a little more, and it will colonize faster. I like my jars to last as long as possible. Good luck to you.
