First grow in over a decade, a few concerns...
    #23814426 - 11/08/16 10:25 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys,

So I have started growing again  first time in over a decade. Everything has been going awesome. This morning I went to check on the FC and noticed, there are some dark lesions or marks on some of the shrooms, and a few of them seem to have the veil breaking prematurely.

I know that the veil breaks when they are mature despite their apparent size, but it just seems premature to me. The FC has an air pump pumping to stones underneath wet perlite, with a very many holes in the top. I also do mist and fan 2-4 times a day because i don't trust the pump for adequate FAE. Temps are between 19-25C and humidity is between 95-99% almost all the time.

The dark spots on the caps seem to form around mycelium that is growing on the caps, but there are some caps that have mycelium growing on them and no dark spots, the discrepancy worries me.

OK first the pics of the "premature" veil break.

And then there's these dark patches and streaks on a couple of stems.

If anyone could share some insights as to weather i need to take corrective action or if I am just worrying for nothing.. any insights would be appreciated.

Peace

Tbh...they look fine I'd just wait for the caps to stretch open a bit and go a nice golden color or for the first sign of spores

Ya got a little water damage but it's not terrible. Perhaps some more FAE might benefit. What kind of chamber are you running? Could you post a pic of the chamber?

Hey Troll eater,

Thanks for the reply. I'll keep an eye on them, this is the first cake so a bit paranoid about contamination as the rest will be birthed soon.

Hey pastyWhyte, thanks for the reassurance, I'll post a pic of the fruiting chamber when I get home this afternoon.

Just from looking at your first picture it doesn't look like there's any holes in your tub at all.
Will still wait for pictures.

As long as your cakes are colonized 100% contamination isn't a huge concern as opposed to uncolonized grain. The mycelium with quickly eat mold spores if I remember right.
Your grow room doesnt have to be sterile just clean.

As far as I can understand that's a pmp you've built there. Many will say that you should remake it into a sgfc.
As for the veil break, that doesn't look like they're yet breaking. I think that's just the cap forming to break in like 2-3 days.
That's a nice cake you've got there, whats the "strain"?

Ok.so here's the pics of the FC

The lid

There are 8mm holes in the lid. The air pump is a dual outlet so it pumps quite a lot of air in there. The reason I built it like this is that the FC shares a garage with 5 dogs at night, so I need to have filtered air going in there while they are milling around, shaking/scratching and carrying on.

As I said,I mist 2-4 times a day,but am meticulously clean about the environment before hand. Busy building a "lab" and a flow hood for cloning and such in the near future :mushroom2: but for now this is the best option for me.

Thanks Spongegar! It's Cambodian. Got 2 other cakes in there pinning, and another consolidating in the incubation cupboard,so will have some group shots soon.

Thought I'd post a pic

Got 6 jars of Golden teacher in there as well as 4 more Cambodian and a casing of Cambodian as well. I reckon I'll start a journal.

Thanks for the input guys, was worried this morning. Putting so much into it, they feel like babies.

That unit can't be pulling much FAE. Misting in poor FAE is what is causing the water damage and possible pseudomonias on your caps. It's also contributing to the weak stipe development, tho the caps still look pretty meaty. So it's not horrible but it could be better and might get worse.
