is this a good substrate mix?

Just seeing if the proportions on this sound right.
4 quarts horse manure 3 quarts coir 2 quarts vermiculite 1 quart gypsum
10 quarts substrate to 5 quarts spawn. These are the ingredients that are easily accessible to me now but in the future I think my ideal recipe would be
2 quarts horse manure 1 quart straw 1 quart coffee grounds 3 quarts coir 2 quarts vermiculite 1 quart gypsum
and maybe supplement with cow manure, chicken manure, other additives etc.

gypsum seems a little heavy to me.
I go: a big hand full of coir and then another 1/2 handful, a handful of Hpoo, a handful of vermiculite .. and some gypsum
not carefully measured ... throw it together, mix it up, grow some mushrooms
edit. I don't do 'additives'. your grain spawn does the nutrition

Sounds good..coffee gypsum and chicken manure don't need any more then 5%..people will tell you additives don't do squat...I'm not convinced

Oh you. Your making this to hard on yourself. Either you doing coir / verm/ gypsum because it's contam safe and no pasteurization is needed. Or your doing a sub that needs pasteurization like crap, straw, coffee. There for coirs not needed and adds to cost. Stick with one or the other. Leave the coffee out of it when your useing straw. 70% straw 30% crap is a classic sub with huge yields. Hell if you can pull it off straw logs are the best yeild per spawn used. But too much work involved. Your choice easy coir vs hard work with anything else for little to no yeild increase.

I'm sold on the gypsum at least. Best additive I've used so far.
To the op looks good! Definitely a better mix than anything I've come up with. My lazy ass sticks to Cvg

I love a diverse substrate with additives it's healthy. Coffee or chicken manure..they do the same thing so one or the other.

Right on, my biggest change is trying out the gypsum in that amount. Before I was only throwing in a cup but from what I've read people think it helps when you use up to 10 percent so i'm thinking somewhere around 2 cups to a quart would be on point.
I think once you get to the point of having isolates with solid genetics with basically repeatable results it would be fun to do tests with different additives to see what works and if its worth the extra effort.

Cronicr, how do you prepare coffee so it's not a crazy mold vector? Used coffee is partially sterilized by the boiling water vapor, so it always molds on me eventually. Coffee was the cause of my first contam explosion (well a part of it), I'm sure. I'm just interested. Do you sterilize it and wait until full colonization to fruit (spawning in front of a flowhood or something)?

1 quart of gypsum would have been a mighty mess, your sub would look like some sort of constructing material. When using additives it's always better to err on the side of caution.

Pasturize it with everything else...it is nowhere near sterilized or even pasturize in a coffee pot

So if I prepare something like CVG, which has no beneficial bacteria to speak of, by pasteurizing with used coffee, it'd work? Or does it work because you use fecal matter?

Yep..I've used it with pretty much everything for awhile now...you can use fresh grounds as well but we say spent because it's free lol

10 quarts of spawn in total so 2 cups would be 5% of volume that sounds reasonable
