Ok, so a couple of my logs is looking really weird. Others are fine. Lime Pasteurized hardwood pellets, no supplements. Here's a pic of one of them.

What is your current humidity? Looks like a dry mutated lump.

If its not the growing environment, that it has either mutated or it has bacteria.
Was is grain spawn or liquid culture transfer? And how much lime?

Also what is the temperature in degrees C?

Liquid culture > to grain > 1 quart jar per 5lb log

temp is 75-80.

I believe it was 2 tablespoons of lime per log.

My guess is leaning towards bacteria.

Ok so its not your growing environment, thats not too much lime either.
So how old was the LC and how long did the grain take?

Also do you have enough FAE?

Bacterial.
Pick it off and cut a new slit. Pink is extremely resilient and I have had batches look really shitty and still produce - I run 4-5 x 200kg batches/month of pink sub, does not go wrong often but when it does...

The one in the background looks a little cold maybe, min 18c for pinks.
Also try straight straw next time.

Hey Porkzirra,

Not to get off topic and just and FYI, but I've noticed pinks do much better on straw than they do on wood...go figure.  You might try a wood/straw blend or try some on straw just to see the differences. On wood, they tend to grow much denser and smaller.

Hey solarity,
What sub do you run them on?  Have you noticed the morph differences between those on wood and those on straw subs as well?

I've done straw before and had good results. Couldn't find any organic straw recently and figured I'd try some wood pellets as I was doing some blues in the same run. As for density, I am seeing that they are growing a bit more dense than when on straw. More woody is the only descriptive word I can think of. The fruits aren't dry either.

Temp has held a steady 75F. That seems well within their temp range. Right?

This whole log is like this.

I'll pick off the blobs and hope for better fruits. I just noticed another log has one of these blobs just starting that has other normal looking fruits already growing.

Thanks!

Temp is good.
It may be something chemical in the wood pellets or just the substrate generally but they don't like something thats for sure. The ones in the background don't looks so good, difficult to tell what it is, I assume they have fresh air, at that temp you will need a lot as they should be growing really fast.

Pink on straw from one of my grow kits.

Wood resins and oil is what they don't like. The tree's remaining defences.
Enriched paper produces 0% waste if at the correct ratio.

Paper pellets are 99% fiber, no resins.

Hmmm... Could be the wood pellets. Damn. The blue ones I have growing look a little odd too > A bit skinny so to speak. Same substrate as the pinks.

I have 3 pink and 3 blue jars of grain ready to transfer. I have some but it has been in the weather for so long and the last time I used it, all the logs contaminated with trich so I decided to give wood pellets a try.

Well TBH they are not made to grow mushrooms. They are for burning, or cat litter.
It is possible to wash the pellets, soaked in hot water for a few hours.

The water will turn amber in colour, with an oil patch on top.
Unfortunately you will need to enrich it after drying.

I wonder, does the taste of the mushroom change with the substrate? Meaning, will one grown on straw taste different than one grown on hard wood fuel pellets?

Here are 2 cluster of blue oysters I picked this morning that were in the same fruiting chamber as the pink oysters shown in the pic above. These logs were made at the same time using the same portion lime + wood pellets.(They were blue/dark grey yesterday)

Those look good...they'll definitely lose color as they age...there's a window of harvesting for best appearance and it's less than 24 hours...golds really lose color fast when past picking prime.  Anyway, just to clarify, it's the pinks that don't do well on wood, all the others do just fine.  You'll get better color and yields if you supplement your sub.  I've successfully grown oysters on black walnut and they do fine...that's not to say they wouldn't do better on a wood with less colors/tannins/oils or whatever...in the case of walnut, the inhibitory compound is juglone...
You will notice subtle taste differences between straw and wood grown fruit.

Gotcha. Thought pinks were wood lovers. I'll have to look back to the books

So far, best tasting between the pinks and blues have been the pink. The blues have distinct taste. Can't put my finger on it.

As for supplements, I did pasturize a few logs using fuel pellets + wheat bran + lime and it all contaminated. Guess I could try again.

As far as I know bran supped subs need to be sterilized.  I've never used lime so not sure how that works on bran.  Someone else might have better info...sorry, not much help there.
You should try golds, they're super tasty.

No mention of FAE?? Both your blues and pinks are trumpeting from too much CO2. The pink mutant is an indication of stress, maybe lack of air flow? Or more likely too much change in conditions. The way I think of it is the mycelia says "hey it's time to fruit, oh wait too much CO2, better push up, ok now it's time, oh wait..." etc. Pinks fruit quickly, so aborts are fairly rare. Keep it warm, wet, and well ventilated.

I have a Vics cool mist running 24/7 and as well as a tu with two ultrasonic foggers going every 20-25 minutes. I have one of the zippers open all the way up. This still keeps the humidity to 90% and dips to 80% when foggers aren't running. I figured the cool mist blowing constantly would be enough FAE. There are also slits cut in the sides of the Martha.

I've got some lion's manes in there now. I'll post some pics tomorrow to show how they are doing.
