Newb with his 1st cactus and some repotting questions
    #23810774 - 11/07/16 07:20 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Got a little antsy and decided I need a cactus now..today. So I tried the cactus store- closed, and I tried 3 other big box stores before i found this specimen on the bottom shelf of a wal mart.

Myrtillocactus geometrizans
I figured I needed a practice cactus for some tissue culture experiments I want to do. They range from about 3-4 inches tall. (those are baby food jars next to them)
There are 3 cactus in the pot. My instinct is to separate and repot them individually into larger pots.
They feel moderately moist going by weight/heft.... at least they don't feel bone dry.
Should I water the pot really well before I pull the plants out, or should i leave it as it is?
And should I water after I repot them, or should I let them stay dry for 4-7 days?
Should I go up to just a 4inch pot, or go for a gallon size?

Pulling them apart may cause some damage which could require a week or so to callous, so personally I would not water...then again it is easier to get plants out of the ground when the soil is wet if pulling weeds, so I may be way off here.

Basically, those are pretty established plants, so they can handle what your bringing as long as you take care.

Gently remove the soil from the roots as you carefully separate them - then repot and leave dry for a while.

Myrtillocactus geometrizans is not active, but is widely used as grafting stock, and it pups very readily.  I have several of them.

Thanks.
I realize they're not active... I just needed an inexpensive practice cactus(tm)to get my feet wet. I'm not ballsy enough to try it with a $40 cutting yet.

Now I need to decide if I want to keep the growing, or let them go dormant- mostly for the culturing- I'm not sure which would be best.

I'm probably going to start my tissue culture experiments with cauliflower- I hear that it lends itself to those experiments quite well.

$40 plus $15 shipping. Which I wouldn't mind if it was worth it. Did you have some clones or varieties you didn't like?

Good genetics are worth the investment.

I have great genetics lying about. Failed graft stocks and just thrown away.

I know a guy that runs a FREE good genetics cactus disposal service.
It's a shame to let good stock go to waste.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/31021987/20161030_175018.jpg

I rescued a pilosocereus azureus from a cvs pharmacy, it was in a pot with no drainage holes, on the back shelf in the dark next to a bunch of other dead cacti, it was actually part of a 3 cacti pot, but one was long dead and shriveled and it had this weird terrible black asphalt like plastic that they melted and poured on top of the soil, it hardened rock solid and had nowhere to allow water to reach the soil, it was like they designed this thing to die in a month or so. Anyways I bought it at a discount, pulled the thing out of the pot, the 2 cacti were root bound in a compact block of peat and the "soil" the peat block was planted in I'm pretty sure was pure coco coir powder like never been hydrated before coco coir powder, anyways I carefully broke the plastic layer away which took a bunch of spines with it and a bit of skin, I then gently removed the rooted peat block from the coir and gently used a brush and some pressure to free the roots. I tried to save as many as I could. I then mixed 50/50 potting soil and perlite since I still need to get sang/grit and potted it in a small pot, I'll give it some time to root, heal and get a little bigger before re doing the soil better. Its doing good sofar, that was maybe 2-3 weeks ago. You can't see it in the pic because that was right after planting but not the top half has fattened up a bunch and I'm pretty sure it's grown a few mm since.
