Anyone smoke cigars? 1

I went to the local cigar shop today and got my first "real" cigar. It was 6 bucks. Smoked it, took me about 45 minutes.
It didnt really taste that great, maybe because I got a cheaper cigar. Anyway, anyone smoke cigars regularly?

Yup, just about every day now. Started with pipe tobacco, but i'm really starting to mostly spend on cigars.
heres some i really like(and most others do as well):
$2.5-4 Nica Libres, Chillin Moose, various 'little cigars' from fuente, padron, LGC, RyJ, etc.
$4-6 - Padron x000 line, AJ fernandez stuff, A. Fuente Gran Reserva line, CAO Brazilia
$6-10 - Liga Undercrown, Undercrown Shade, Liga Privada #9(if you get lucky on price), Fuente Hemmingway line(especially the Short Story), My Fathers, There are a ton of awesome cigars in this price range
$10-20 - Low end OpusX, Fuente Don Carlos, Padron 1964 line, Drew estate unicos
Those are all very good cigars for their price range
Also, cigarbid.com is your friend. lots of good deals there
EDIT: also, what did you smoke?

I'll for sure try some of those. I can't remember the brand, I just asked the shop owner what he recommended for someone who had never smoked cigars. But i do know he said it was a really "mild" cigar.
Anyway, I've smoked lots of black n milds, and that cigar that I smoked today for sure beat the hell out of those haha.

No, no cigars.
I had a few good ones growing up though, when my stepdad came into the picture we tried to form "new family" memories, and one of those new memories was smoking cigars together after x-mas, never really caught on though.
I remember smoking one which said "Punch" on it, it was an $8-10 stogie, and tasted kind of sweet and smokey, not bad though. But I fucked my mouth up with suboxone, had cysts in my saliva ducts under my tongue from eating them for so many years, so smoking bothers that, but I don't mind being around smoke.
I have some homegrown tobacco curing at the moment, doubt I will smoke it though, grown just for fun.
Didn't Obama make importing Cuban cigars legal now? Wonder how those taste.

bleh. black and milds are nasty. I especially recommend the Padron 2000 if your looking for something more medium-to-full bodied. theyre really consistant, always have a good draw, and dont last all day. Plus you can get em for 4-5$ depending on your states laws

Some are good, some are shit, like anything else. Its never been hard to get them. ihavanas.com has been shipping them to the US for years, and will even send another box if customs finds yours(which it rarely does)
Ive only had about 8 or 9 different cubans, but the only one that impressed me was the H. Upmann Conniseour A

Yeah black n milds are gross. Id for sure like a stronger cigar than the one smoked today. It wasnt bad by any means, just not what I was expecting (very light smoke if that makes any sense, also really bitter).

not really a cigar person, but when I go fishing or sometimes for a hike during bug season i'll grab one. The only ones I've smoke in 5 years are Avanti Cigars. They are infused with Anisette, very strong tongue numbing licorice.
Love it!
Cigar aficionados will scoff and berate, but I think they are good.
I do smoke a pipe once in awhile too.

How are you lighting it? Its more than likely just the cigar you're smoking, but lighting it evenly is important as well
Your best bet is using a torch lighter to get the end glowing evenly(called 'toasting'), and then taking a few small puffs about 1/2" away from the flame to finish getting it started.
matches/soft flame don't light cigars very well, unless the flame is yuuuge.

I do. Price doesn't coordinate with taste imo. Just like wine. I personally only ever buy acid line cigars anymore though because they taste chemically delicious. But most connessueirs will call them bullshit.

connoisseurs can say whatever they want, ACID is the most popular line of cigars on the planet. no denying that.
Personally, i'm not enough of a fan to buy them. But if someone offers me one for free i certainly won't say no

Im doing the toasting thing, but using matches, so that may be the issue. Took me like 7 matches to get the thing lit. Quote:

From what I've gathered, any cigar that comes from a liquor store is essentially dogshit.

I missed this thread? Yes, i love cigars but limit myself to one per week. Oliva, macanudo, and punch are my most frequent smokes but i vary. My last stick was a cao flathead 6x60. Extremely slow burn and full body with dominant chocolate notes. Good stick but a dedication!

thats not really an issue for cigar smokers. Most dont even have one every day. the 'heavy' cigar smokers have 2-3 a day, maybe 4, tops. And unless you smoke gas station garbage, your paying 4-10$ a cigar. so its far more costly than cigarettes
Plus, cigars last alot longer than cigarettes. You could probably fit in a corona or robusto on a lunch break (45-1hr) but unless you have a super fucking awesome job, you cant be taking hour long breaks all the time

Flatheads are great. I had the Piston (lancero) a few weeks ago and was very impressed. Probably the best lancero of the few that i've smoked

I started smoking cigars right after trying weed and before cigarettes
My first few were cheap Cubans while I was on vacation in Austria
I still enjoy a good cigar every now and then, but unfortunately, few people my age enjoy them
I've got a real nice Cuban in London this past summer that I brought back to the states for me and my ex (was gonna be her first cigar). She stopped smoking tobacco though so we never had it and it's just sitting in my drawer now.

I'm enjoying it alot, its the 4th(and last) book in the Inda series by Sherwood Smith. Its apparently a prequel series to Smiths other books, but i havn't read those yet.
I'm trying to think of a way to describe the series, but its kind of hard to without spoilers. heres the synopsis of the first book
Quote:
Indevan Algara-Vayir was born the second son of a powerful prince, destined to stay at home and defend his family's castle. But when war threatens, Inda is sent to the Royal Academy where he learns the art of war and finds that danger and intrigue don't only come from outside the kingdom.
One word of warning: There is alot of made-up vocabulary in these, moreso than most fantasy novels that i've read. I know alot of people dislike that, so if that bothers you i'd probably skip over this series.

I don't smoke cigars but I have like 20 or 30 empty punch boxes I get free at the liquor store. Still trying to find a use for them all. I usually use them in trim season to store bud droppings.

Make em into guitars and sell em on Etsy or Ebay or something. Probably cost you $20-$30 per piece and you could sell each for a good $75-200.

You should make 30 world class cigar box guitars, and then put them all in a bonfire. That singular act might revive the punk movement.

I used to smoke one or two a day ,but now only one every week or two .
I bought a cpl Stainless Steel wine coolers and made Spanish cedar drawers for humidors .I have 500 or 600 cigars .
I only buy if its a super sale on internet . like box's or bundles .
that way I can smoke cigars that are $6 to $15 retail for $1.50 to $2.50

I've smoked a few cigars I really like the jm cigars they are really tasty and makes your hands stink for a good day. I smoke white owl and zigzag cigars to but I use weed instead of tobacco. I really like the mango white owls with some sticky herbs. But I've smoked a few real cigars but I pefer camel filters and the gas station cigars give me headaches I tried black and mild but it doesn't get me buzzed and usually leaves me spitting with a raging headache. But I do enjoy jm cigars they taste great I like to smoke them by the lake I sit and watch the boats and smoke my cigar on the shore. I started smoking cigars because of this album cover

Aye. Tobacco and the act ov smoking is psychoactive for me. I find a nice cigar to impart greater concentration and the relaxation ov a fine cigar session affords a sense ov well being. A cigar is superb for the enjoyment ov a book or conversation and relaxation with friends, especially if they happen to be puffing a stick as well.
Tobacco has an extensive history ov psychoactive usage. I also find the tobacco genius to have a very wise and powerful presence. Upon my wall rests an original work by brother ov the occult artes Daniel Schulke. It depicts the tobacco genie arising from a vessel, with tobacco resins used in parts ov the painting. It is certainly one ov the most powerful artifacts i own and has a very demanding presence. When i received it(along with a Val Denham lithograph owned by John Balance), i felt a powerful force emerge from the package once opened, and one corner ov a fabric piece i have by Diamanda Galas actually came off the wall(unframed and affixed with Velcro) at that very instance!

Yeah, a post your stick thread would be cool.
Oliva Siere G in toro: No complaints whatsoever. Medium body with prominent cedar but no bitterness, even and rather slow burn, perfect draw, excellent smoke production. As good as it gets in the price range(i paid $6.25) IMO. Olivas are yummers.

This thread makes me want to try some new cigars, it's been a few years since I've smoked a good one.
I rarely smoke tobacco anymore since switching to vaping, but every once in a while I'll find an excuse to buy some. Problem is if I buy a pouch or tin of cavendish for my pipe I have a tendency to smoke all of it before it gets stale because I tell myself I don't want to waste it. Hmm. Picking up cigars is probably a better option since I usually want it for a specific occasion (initially).
In the past when buying a cigar I would walk into a shop on a whim, browse, realize I'm extremely ignorant about cigars, and buy one with a label that looks neat. Sometimes I got a good one I liked but many times I felt I wasted eight or nine bucks.
This thread has me thinking I'll formulate a better game plan next time and try to find something to my liking with at least some cursory research done beforehand to help guide my decision on a cigar.
One of my brothers was given a few super old Italian cigars that were just awful. We lit one a few months ago and it was so stale that when one of us took a drag it burned a fourth of the stick. Yuck!
Anybody freeze pipe tobacco? My buddy's roommate mentioned it once and I hadn't heard of it before that one instance. More common in certain areas/regions?

Nah. If its raw tobacco that you grew, you want to freeze it for 72 hrs to get rid of any insect eggs or whatever from it. But anything that you get from a retailer will have been basically sterilized
If you have problems with pipe tobacco going stale, keep it in a mason jar. It will last for years in a regular mason jar with a double lid. It will basically last until the rubber gasget hardens and fails, which takes a decade or more.
Some of my pipetobacco is 15 years old, Still has the original moisure, and smokes/tastes great. Most virginia blends will actually improve with age

Thanks
I have so many Mason and Ball jars that I'm not using for canning (or ) right now. I'll probably test out some storage methods with those then, kind of having a facepalm moment over that not having occurred to me before now. Improvement with age has a lot to do with storage which I know I never do properly.
I wonder if many folks have experience storing weed/tobacco mix cigars in homemade humidors, too sacrilegious (and a little off-topic)?

I had me a Cuban cigar on Halloween. If I die tomorrow, I die happy having that experience. It was smooth and didn't leave that cigar stink on me. It didn't give me cigar breath. Truly a beautiful experience and I'm not typically a cigar smoker.

Would love to try to roll a "Cuban Blunt" one day.

Asylum is a pretty good brand in their price range. Never had the Insidius but its not suprising it had a creamy flavor, thats pretty common of mild cigars. Although there are a some medium->full smokes that are creamy as well(especially the padron 19xx line and the family reserve, great cigars if you get the chance)

I bought it at a local shop. I walked in and stared at the wall of cigars for a really long time. Finally, the owner guy asked if he could help me. I told him I was looking for a Cuban cigar. I think he popped a semi-boner and led me to the counter. He pulled out this Ziploc bag that had seen better days, so I knew it was legit. The guy's brother or something went to Cuba that day and was having a few boxes imported in. There were a few different sizes inside. I chose the middle one. He literally fell all over himself to help me cut it and light it.

I said the same thing. You'd be surprised how much a person can change. I was like "I don't even like alcohol" now I drink every night. I don't really smoke much, but I smoke more tobacco than weed now.

Nice. I was eying a padron at the shop today, but settled on this:
Don Pepin Garcia Original in Churchill. Full body smoke that's definitely on the spicy side. Black pepper and nutmeg with a long earthen finish. Relatively even burn. The issue however was definitely an overly loose draw which truncated the duration. Decent smoke though. Attractive bands.

What do y'all like to drink with your sticks? Despite my proclivity toward alcohol, i actually do'nt usually partake when i'm smoking. I've come to favor drinking powerade(blackberry and the lighter blue one are good) with a cigar as they seem to accentuate the tastes without overpowering them.

Before 5:00 PM, i usually have a diet mtn. dew with my cigars.
After 5PM, i usually have water with it, but if i have a non-caff pop like Ginger Ale i'll drink that. I usually like bubbly sweet drinks with cigars, but just cant do caffeine after 5
Recovering alcy, so i never drink alcohol in general
Also, Love those don pepin blues. Had my first one a few weeks ago

And i just finished smoking this tasty lil treat about 20 mins ago(This also happens to be blended by Don Pepin)

I always take pictures of of my cigars, cause i'm a showoff/instagram whore

Went to a CAO event and picked up some Amazon Basins. It was buy 5 CAO cigars get 2, so i also got a free CAO Colombia (smoked it, was decent) and CAO Consiglieri (havnt smoked it yet)

Amazon Basin a seriously awesome cigar. Its pretty hard to find, but if you do see them, i strongly suggest you get some. It also has a tobacco band that you can smoke right through, so it has some novelty value on top of being an amazingly flavorful smoke

Well the most recent cigar I smoked was by far the worst I've had so far. It was just way too bitter for me.

Its funny because this was the most expensive one ive bought so far (11 dollars) vs the other 5 dollar ones ive bought which werent that bad (one was reallly good).
Sorry my thumb is so gross btw, I have a terrible habit of picking the skin around it

Those are so cool and look awesome. I have'nt been able to find one yet unfortunately. Glad you got to enjoy it .
Today's stick was a Padron 1964 anniversary series maduro. Taste is phenomenal and i love the profile. Very 'Caribbean'; black pepper, molasses, and rum. Full body. The draw was surprisingly loose however. Dat taste though .

Just lit up a Diamond Crown TAA 2016 charity cigar.

Super tasty. The first inch is almost overwhelmingly peppery, but it mellows out pretty quickly into an oaky flavor. Only about 3 inches in but its super good.
I definately recommend picking up the Toast Across America 2-pack. the 2016s are common and you might even find a 2015 here or there. its 50 bucks, but the cigars are top-tier and the money goes to a good cause. They both some with an OpusX and JC Newman/DiamondCrown in a unique vitola

Sweet! I hope that it finished out well for you.
Unfortunately, i'm having trouble with my phone's charging port and cant import new photos from it right now. Today was a Joya de Nicaragua Cuatro Cinco Reserva in toro. The tobacconist claimed that it was very full bodied with big pepper. My experience was quite different! I'd say medium to medium-full body. I got no pepper out ov it whatsoever. Conversely, i found it quite creamy with dominant caramel and some honey and even green tea. A great winter smoke. Draw was a tad tight at first but loosened to perfection. Very good.
A cigar gives one incentive to think. While i like reading with one, i can also just sit around alone doing nothing but smoking lost in thought. Absorbing the tastes, entranced by the smoke, contemplating the world around me. I believe that they lend toward left brain thinking to balance out one's wistful and creative right hemisphere. Analytical perspective tidying up cranial projections like an earth tone headband for wild hair.

Bump for awesome cigar.
Been saving this bad motherfucker specifically for new years. A Don Arturo Destino al Siglo de Familia, from 2013. Similar flavor to Opus X and other high end fuentes. Perfect draw & construction, but that should go without saying.
And it is by far the most beautiful cigar i've ever had the pleasure of smoking.
