Ready for grains

Hello everyone So I am ready to be more successful with my bulk grows. I have read these forums, as well as the ultra useful Teks now for a couple of years, thank you to all who contribute. A small history of my cultivation: I have dabbled in mycology a little here and there for about five years now, two or three of those years being more serious with the hobby. My children are all out of the house now so I have more time and financial resources to do things the way I would like. I have had quite a few great flushes with the PF Tek, and some pretty shitty ones when I would deviate from proven methods. I should know better as I am a horticulturist by training, I just always think there must be a better, easier way.... So I have learned that lesson, mostly with my wonderful wife complaining of all the extra gear and costlyness of spores. I have also played with grains, I have a proper pressure cooker, 22 quarts I believe, and have had a couple of decent flushes from the Damion 50/50 using colonized milo via multi spore. I am familiar with agar and dabbled for a bit at a buddy's home with some cultures. We actually did quite well with Shitakke 75 and a few oyster cultures.
The wife and I are planning to hit the road in our tiny home on wheels in spring and would like to have plenty supplies for the trip. So, let the questions begin.
First, per my reading it seems like fucking with grains using MS inoculation is pretty well pointless regardless of of sterile teqnique, true or false? If so I will start trying PastyPlates ASAP. Along those lines; I have 12 qts of colonized milo currently, all seem very healthy, perhaps some bacteria in a couple, but t otherwise healthy jars. I have about ten six quart tubs I was planning to spawn to.... a. is this a good idea for a semi noob b. is coir/verm my best bet? c. is gypsum totally nessecary, I'm trying to KISS I have read the dub tubs are set and forget, but also have seen misting and fanning of dubs.
Lastly, I will NEED to warm my grow area, I have a radiant oil type heater I could use, as well as the heat lamp I used for my chickens earlier this year. Thank you all in advance for your help. Dick

what is the temp, far too many think it is essential and then turns out they are warm enough.
FYI I just skimmed through your post after reading about children. I admit I tend to make overly long posts myself too.

Pardon the lengthy post, it was meant kind of as an intro as well, I had posted in getting started and was directed over here. I am not 100% on the temp, but I know it will dip under 65 as the weather changes. It is an add on in a shitty old house and poorly insulated. Any advice on the other, more time sensitive topics ? I'd love to hear from TCs as I want this to be done properly. Dick

If the average is above 65F many would say no heating is required. I do use it myself sometimes but it is very low power, like 2W, most use excessively powerful heaters which can often overheat jars. Many are measuring the temp around the jars while the jars can be warmer.
Many will say colder grows lead to more potent fruits too, but can be slower to grow, claims like this are always controversial, but I have never once seen anyone claim hotter grows lead to more potent fruits -which to me is very telling...
I used to do MS grows from vendors I trust, I have heard these vendors are seemingly not as trustworthy now though... so agar may be recommended.
I have done grows without gypsum. Many swear by it, I know RR said it could make significant increases in yield, not sure it they were exaggerated, I thought they might be.

Absolutely not. There is nothing wrong with MS, especially if you are just getting started. One thing I would recommend for MS growing is to order at least 3-5 syringes to increase your chances of getting something really clean to work with. I personally rarely have issues with cleanliness when ordering from a trusted vendor. In fact, for my most recent grow, I threw caution to the wind and ordered just one B+ syringe. With that one syringe I inoculated 10 MS grain masters that all came out pretty much as clean as can be for an MS grow. I had zero contamination issues, and even after expanding a whole lot via G2G, I had ZERO jars with noticeable bacteria, and of course no mold. So yeah, agar is great, and do it if you are so inclined. But it's not the be-all and end-all that some here would have you believe. Getting huge flushes from MS is not a challenge if you are smart and hedge your bets where necessary.

a. Sure, why not? Are you doing monotubs? b. I recommend it. These materials have a lot of benefits and few drawbacks. c. Gypsum is not strictly necessary but very highly recommended. I would consider it a necessity if I were you. Two easy ways to obtain it: you can buy powdered gypsum from Amazon (it's commonly used for brewing beer.) Or you can acquire some drywall scraps and grind it up yourself. I was able to go to a big box hardware store and get a big pile of scrap drywall spacers for free. You can grind this up, paper and all, and use it for mycology.

A radiant oil-filled heater is perfect for this hobby, because this type of heater produces a gentle and consistent heat rather than the spiky, erratic heat you get from many heaters. If you can dial in your oil-filled heater properly, you should be able to keep your grow room at a perfect 68-72 at all times. Aim to heat the room that the grow is in; I would recommend placing the heater in the room with the grow, but as far from the grow as possible.

Thank you both!!! I will hopefully start a grow log soon with my progress regarding bulk. I think I will go for the dub tubs so if one goes bad I have more. Perhaps a mini mono as well. Back to reading reading reading, at my age with the way I've treated my brain and body I am surprised I retain anything

Ok :-) So here is one of 12 jars prepped with milo and the light boil to 1 hour soak method. I shook it less than 48 hours ago and this is what I found this evening. Plan is to allow 7 days to fully colonize and spawn to bulk. Seem solid?

No time line. ..as long as it takes to colonize then use it

Is there something in particular I should watch for to indicate full colonization? Thank you so much

Good advice there!
Ive done MS syringe to grain directly never had issues. But u get a better strain when u use agar first. Artifical selection. MS grows are more natural selection.

I have an old SGFC that I used as overflow if I wound up with too many cakes that I'd like to use as a mini mono. It is about 12x18x18 inches and has the 1/4" hole grid in place. Could I line it with a black trash bag and fruit it like a mono with the SGFC holes for FAE? Or should I jus t go buy a new tub? TIA Dick

Sure, give it a try. Probably need to tape up a bunch of the holes.

Does anyone have any advice regarding the size of holes I should use in a six quart dub tub setup? I was thinking 1" and using the MP tape tek. Two layers on bottom, one on top. Do you think maybe I should try the 1/4" holes on the short sides??? Maybe five per side directly under the handle?? Thanks folks. Dick

I completed three 6 quart dub tubs today I used a 1:1 ratio with CVG two quarts spawn, two CVG. Two 1.5" holes on long sides and one up high on short sides. MP tape over the holes, two layers at sub level and one layer up top. Wish me luck everyone.
